Anyone else know how to go cashless in Singapore?

Post by ashajaywalk » Sat, 12 Sep 2015 1:58 am

To keep things short: I really do not like carrying cash. It's heavy, messy and takes up too much space (especially coins). 2 months ago, I decided to try to go "cashless". By this, I mean I am trying to make all my transactions digital. These are the things I use so far

1) Uber/Grabtaxi - Whenever I need a cab

2) DBS/UOB Card - Where I store all my money. I use this for most of my transactions. (Groceries etc)

3) SkipQue - To order food without waiting

4) BuyMeADrink - To order drinks without waiting

5) Bitcoin - For the few places in Sg that accept bitcoin

Anyone know other apps that I can use to replace cash in Singapore?

What about those hawker stall cards?
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

You seem to choose places based on whether they accept cash or not, which is kind of an inefficient thing to do. I would choose a place first and then choose the best way to pay, rather than the other way round.

Oh, you mean how to live without cash, not "go cashless". The best way to "go cashless" in singapore is simply go to Brix or OT and drink it up. You'll be guarenteed cashless by the morning. :)

I agree with WD40 though, figure out where you spend your money then determine the best way to pay. I think getting a Visa or Mastercard with NFC (Visa PayWave/MC PayPass) will be the most efficient for Singapore as it is used in a lot of places.

Trying to go completely cashless (kopitiam cards, etc) will be more of a hassle than just going to the ATM occasionally. Shoot for 75% with one of those cards I mentioned and then hit the ATM occasionally.

It's all a scam, as 99% of the people using that card will never finish it off to $0.00. They'll lose it with a few dollars on it, and buy a new one.

Oops you are right it is 10%. Zzm, over the years I have spent over $300 on the card, half of it in Lau pasat and half at tampines mall food court, so I have made good use of it. :) I also got it renewed for $2.

Talking about food, we are at Papa Johns in Tampines right now. Bored of Dominos and Pizza Hut veg options.

The only thing that even remotely surprises me in that statement is that you eat at Lau Pa Sat. I would assume it is too pricey of a hawker center for your frugal ways :)

Not pricey at all, I almost had lunch daily there for 1 yr. Lots of Indian stalls and I rarely spent more than $5 a day. Ask anyone, for Indian food that is cheap. I can't eat chicken rice even if it is $2.50 :)
