Stay at Home Dads in SG have no legal protection

Post by QRM » Wed, 26 Aug 2015 4:45 pm

I just heard on the grape vine that should a stay at home dad get divorced in Singapore he will effectively have zero rights.

Because of the well intention women charter, which basically says any married man will have to pay maintenance to his wife in the event of a divorce. Even though the husband has not worked and has not got a penny to his name he still has to pay, even if its his wife who has run off with the milkman.

Here they also look at how much contribution the husband has made to the marital assets in most case zero because he was too busy changing nappies attending school meetings etc. they will calculate the asset split based on that so a 80/20 split to the wife?

Surely this cant be true? its a potential time bomb waiting to go off as more and more husbands are looking after the kids. A chum in the exact same position as above has seen 3 local lawyers and they all basically said he is buggered and one even asked how would be even be able to pay for the legal bills.

I believe at least one member of the board can give a run down on the Singapore divorce law ;)
