Rental options for short term periods

Post by mattedwardsuk » Mon, 06 Jul 2015 8:12 pm

Hi all

This is my first post so here goes!

I'm a Brit with family living in Singapore. I came out over Christmas and New Year, fell in love with the place and I'm in the process of taking a job. Since the job carries a 3 month probation I can only really commit to 3 months rental on a property. Can I ask what's the process for renting over shorter terms? My in-laws are committed to several years so need to get this sussed out soonish.

Also any recommendations on area? I'm going to be working near Bugis but have a limited budget of no more than 3,500$.

Thanks Matt

You will have no choice but the commit to a minimum of 6 months, but finds a short term lease for less than 12 months will be almost impossible. Most leases are for 2 years as that is generally what the EP/S pass is issued for. The fact that you are on probation means nothing. Just if you are that unsure of your capabilities, I think I'd just stay in the UK, truth be known. You cannot venture overseas with a defeatist attitude as that will surely defeat you. It is against the law for property owners to rent for tenures of less than 6 months. You can, however, if you are that unsure of yourself, rent a Serviced Apartment, but that is likely to set you back a minimum of 3.5K/mo up. (these are specifically designed and licensed to rent for monthly terms).

Thanks for the information. In all truth I'm very excited about the new role and don't think the probation will be an issue more so that financially I'll not have a clearer understanding of my gross income until after the probation period so just being financially cautious. I think from the sounds of things a services apartment will be my best bet.

Maybe one of our other regulars will have a idea of the Serviced Apartments located in/near the Bugis area. I'm a Flat owner for the last 16 years so am out of that and the rental market completely so am of no use there.

If you have any concerns leave the family in the UK and get a room off Craigslist by yourself for the first 3 months. If your family come for a few days in that time get a hotel. When probation finishes get the family out into your new place with a 2 year lease.
