GESS, CIS Primary experiences

Post by pistache » Mon, 08 Jun 2015 11:43 am

Hello,

Our family lives in Singapore now for one year. We are not really happy with the school our kids (7 and 10) are currently attending. Specifically, the lack of communication on subjects covered in class and school results. We are considering to move our kids to either GESS European section or CIS. We'd like to know your experiences with these schools and whether you are happy with school-parents communication.

How is the school program communicated with the parents and how often are school results reported? Do kids bring tests at home for parents' review? How much effort goes into homework? Can you easily have a face-to-face discussion with the teachers?

At GESS, what is the language spoken on the playground? Do many kids tend to switch to German? Our kids don't speak German.

Many thanks for sharing your experiences!

My family did not have a great experience at CIS; we left the school. It may have improved since then, I don't know really.

I would say - ask tough questions of the enrollment team. How many students leave for other schools in Singapore? What's the staff turnover like? And so on. I am fairly suspect of all the privately held (ie, non "trust/non profit") schools in Singapore after our experience there. You really have no oversight as a parent or the school community if there's not some sort of governing body.
