Is there a limit to the number of CD / DVD / Blu-ray disc you can bring to Singapore?

Moving to Singapore? Ask our regular expats in Singapore questions on relocation and their experience here. Ask about banking, employment pass, insurance, visa, work permit, citizenship or immigration issues.

When I said my belongings followed in January I meant via a shipping company, Pickfords btw, who were careful to point out the "list of things you can't bring to Singapore" provided as part of their relocation information pack. So any DVDs of less than kosher provenance (only a couple I seem to recall) are now in landfill in the UK. The shipping manifest did have to provide the number of CDs, DVDs etc but nothing itemised.

Everything including freight gets scanned, in fact they continuously invest in high tech scanners here including complete container scanners. :)

Anyway let's not fret now..since ICA decided your loot was possibly harmless ;)

X9200, how about production of porn? :p

Out of topic.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia, a guy filmed his neighbours having sex in their balcony. The guy who took the video got charged faster than the couple who did the deed ... :) (what's wrong ......with the fellow who got a free show ?? :D )

What's the laws on nudity here?
To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

Nudity in public is punishable under the indecent behaviour law .. I think. But it's punishable, I know, as is section 377A being real  :o

There was a prominent case of a government Scholar who did a naked walk, in Holland V with her boyfriend

I think she got away with a fine

Alas those days Stomp wasn't that popular :P

Loot? My legitimately purchased, not banned in Singapore possessions are loot? :) Anyway I'm sure they may well have scanned them, they may have even opened the boxes and had a look inside for all I know. I was simply answering the original questions which were, is there a limit on the number of DVDs you can bring in and do you have to individually itemise them, based on my recent experience no and no.

As for the Malaysian interlude, viewing the free show I can understand up to a point (depending on the comeliness of the participants of course) but recording it for later that is more than a little creepy and deserves an arrest :)

I'm sure I read somewhere that it's illegal to be nude in your own home here if you are visible to the neighbours, not sure if that is true or not.

Apologies for not adding A few :P:P after the word loot ... ;)

As for nudity in your own home, I recall there was a case of a Japanese family being naked at home and an "innocent" neighbor called the cops as she was traumatised and corrupted by what she saw (or didn't see ;) ) can't recall the outcome of that incident ... damn Japanese :P

Lucky they weren't German or Dutch :P

Intellectually I understand that the northern european attitude to nudity makes a lot of sense but my repressed Kiwi\Brit upbringing means I just can't cope with it personally :)

On another note how exactly did we get here from a question about bringing your own DVDs into Singapore

Nudity, even in your own home, is a chargeable offense in Singapore if it can be seen by the casual pedestrian/neighbour without literally peering through the window through a crack in the curtains. Frankly, I don't have a problem with it either in the home or in public for that matter (provided it's a place posted for such activities and otherwise restricted to those so inclined. The unwary shouldn't have to be inadvertently exposed to those who enjoy that freedom. But moreso, it should be restricted to nude or semi-clothed only in order to keep out the pervs & other riff-raff as well. I enjoyed my stays in Broome on Cable Beach immensely. It's a shame that most people are so uptight about the way we were created and some novelist a long time ago wrote a book condemning it by using fig leaves, etc.

The real problem is those pesky neighbours who sit in their darkened flats during the day with a pair of binoculars perving out on the neighbours shannigans.

That's very typical on this forum. In fact, if a thread doesn't get derailed within the first two pages, something is definitely wrong. :-k

How did we get here?: It's a holiday week, it's quieter than usual. The few active/interesting topics are auto-morphing into what we usually see of the 'Friday feeling' on typical Friday afternoons... :)

And on a related note, i.e. related to the topic, I ordered the DVD Video of the Hundred Foot Journey from Amazon, (thanks to Raj's recommendation elsewhere) and it arrived without a scratch or a delay, passing the Singapore Customs ;)

maybe they are not so finicky like before !

Here's the trailer ..

Well the reason I asked the question about nudity is that, after we play football everyone hits the shower and in the male changing rooms here almost everyone is stark naked and walking about doing their thing.
I saw the same thing in a college ground where I run, changing room is full of naked people.
And yet the laws are strict hmmmm!

Is there a limit to the number of CD / DVD / Blu-ray disc you can bring to Si...

Thanks to everyone who has replied either on-topic or off. It has all been enlightening.

@JR Thanks in particular for your detailed reply. Also to help you better calibrate your nationality-meter I'm Australian ;-)

I decided to ring the authorities yesterday to get an "official" answer (which I'm coming to learn in Singapore may differ slightly from the "practical" answer). My first port of call was Customs. They very nice customer service person redirected my to the MDA. I eventually spoke an equally nice customer service person who told me that MDA does not have any restrictions on the import of music CDs and as such there is no need to count them or itemise them. While it was not explicitly mentioned I assumed that if the discs were illegitimate copies they my not like that.

With regards to video discs again there did not appear to be any limits but the official line is that all imported video discs will be sent to a classifier to determine if anything is rated R21+. Any disc classified as R21+ would have to "re-exported". Moreover there is SG$1.80 charge per movie to classify them.

That is the official line as at 3:30pm on 3 June 2015.

I suspect the reality is a little closer to that suggested by other commenters. You need to provide an itemised list of the movies being brought in. The customs officers would, from time to time check that list and if necessary send some or all of the videos off for classification.

Did you ask them if the rule applies even if you are above 21 ?? :P

BTW, re-export sounds better .. than 'destroyed' as I was told when I tried to bring in another 'restricted' item - Chewing gum - that was years ago .. ;)

I think the idea is, if a naked man sees another naked man, it's ok, but if a man sees a naked woman or vice versa, it is morally wrong....

And one of the few things that shocked me in Singapore is how it is sort of compulsory to walk naked in the changing room / shower, in Gyms   If you walk with a towel around, it looks pretty much out of place

If you do not record anything and do not do IT (for a)/(in) public then you are clear but this would unlikely be a production of the porn.
