No more beer @ Coffee Shop?

Post by PNGMK » Wed, 20 May 2015 10:12 am

Is this just a Geylang/Little India thing? The number of coffee shops on or near Geylang Road or in Little India that have lost their beer licenses in the last few months is staggering.

I've yet to check further afield but is this the new reality?

The 24hr Coffee Shop in Holland Village also no longer sells beer.

Tied to the new drinking laws. Both Little India and Geylang have a special classification which means much greater restrictions on alchol availability and consumption. Little India was due to the riots, Geylang not sure why. My guess is they want to clean it up.

Rest of Sg gets the 10:30pm to 7am restriction on sales and drinking in public places. Came in 1 April.

It was bad enough having the 1030 curfew but this seems to have been something parliament snuck through or what? It seems to wider than just LI or Geylang....

A cousin had to choose between Sg and HK in the late 80s, early 90s. He visited Sg and reckoned everything closed down at 6pm. Obviously he chose HK.

We seem to be heading back to those days.

...unfortunately. I don't remember Singapore being that strict in the late 80's and early 90's myself but I usually drank in town and not at coffee shops back then. I can see the old pubs (Faber Valley Pub, Jolly Rogers etc) actually doing really well from this change.

Got kicked out of a pub in Club St at 10.30pm last night. They said their permit was reduced to the extent that they could only sell alcohols up to 10.30pm.

Really? That doesn't bode well. :( Certainly not how the new changes were described. No mention of changing closing hours for licenced venues.

Those pubs that stop serving liquor at 10.30 pm are those who licensed themselves as restaurant and added the liquor license (that's what I know from a friend who did exactly the same thing when his location was in the midst of re zoning.. and his permit for bar operation was held up by police )

If they had a bar license that rule does not apply

And in some cases the staff want to get home early, especially when there is no strict monitoring by the owners, so they close any time they like and some owners have too much money they can't be bothered as long as the place covers the costs.

I know few other places, when the owner is not around the staff will tell the boss there's no customer and they will close early. While customers are still there.

My two local 'chain' convenience stores have signs up re: alcohol sales, i.e. none outside of 7am-10.30pm.

Just do what they do in other countries that attempt prohibition; get the shop to deliver 200 cans, that way you never run out.

--- it's all going a bit halal isn't it. I wonder what stop-over tourists will think, landing in a place that's draconian and 'all a bit Mecca'. No doubt this 'alcohol ban' won't get any mention on the STB tourist site/ads. We're all still down at the Raffles enjoying (responsibly) our Singapore Slings.

Clubs, pubs and bars with the right license are not impacted.

Beer promoters can no longer work at hawker centres, AsiaOne Singapore News

SINGAPORE - Breweries have been asked to withdraw their beer promoters from the 107 markets and hawker centres managed by the National Environment Agency (NEA), The Straits Times understands.

Promoters have stopped working at hawker centres for about two weeks.

Letters were sent out to hawker drink stall operators earlier this month reminding them of the ban.

In a letter seen by The Straits Times, Ms Yew Meng Yet, assistant director (tenancy management) of NEA's hawker centres division, said NEA does not allow beer promoters at hawker centres as this could lead to touting amongst the various drink stalls.

'Yah, SG too serious for drinking right. Better gubment tell what is allow ah.'

Maybe outright prohibition will work where taxation hasn't. Though history might cast doubt on that.

'Come to Singapore, enjoy a night at the Quays, drinking $30 halal orange juice or tea [we still need to pay our gouging rent to the government]. Mmm, what a treat, bet you can't wait!'.

- or go to KL, and get things on on a warmer and more human level for 30% of the cost.
