Good fish and chips (not here though, London)

[Nope, I'm not hearing about Geales (Notting Hill), or the Seashell (Regents Park). Short of going to Scarborough or Hull for a weekend, this is the real best F+C most visitors could hope for, and visitors or not, it's the best I've ever had... ]. It's Queensway/Bayswater, perhaps many tourists visit the area and don't realise that just 100yds away is perhaps one of the better chippies in the country.


p.s. Wife has just SMSd me, she going there for lunch today, and I'm bloody well stuck here.... grrr.... lol

I love Fish&Chips, but am far from the expert. Whenever I visit London I go to a place on Berwick Street, as that is where I was told years ago was one of the best (at least within walking distance of my hotel/office at the time).

Not sure what shop sold that, but it sure looks unappetizing to me. Hopefully one did not pay more than a buck fifty for that. Even the chips look wilted.

There is a good Chippy in Wimbledon , not the same as from up north though , they dont appear to do "scraps" down south

The British chip is a curious thing. Ones from a chippie tend to be pretty soggy. Throw them hard enough at a window and they'd probably stick. I suppose a parallel might be the typically massacred rice you get in the usual food-court/hawker place here.... it's just how it is/food as fuel etc. Doesn't matter if you leave half of it... many people seem to.
Elevating the chip is not that hard, there's just not much of a market for it it seems.

So there's no doubt it's the fish that's the star of the show.
Trouble is with all the fish in Europe being hoovered up, EU quotas etc., quality seafood is damned expensive these days. Go and look at what a fresh 8oz fillet of cod in (say) M+S costs, and the chippie doesn't look expensive...

I can't say I've had anything approaching decent F+C here. Perhaps no one is wiling to pay for quality fish, hence why it's all 'Dory-fish' [i.e. Vietnamese catfish].

Yes, it's a shame, but cod is becoming a damned expensive fish.
