No one knows what the new numbering means, how it is derived and so on.
I could (previously) say I lived in D9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 21 etc. all of these were clear and concise.... 'Ooh D10 look at him, (bloody snob) !! :)'

Right now I look at my 6-digit postcode. What does it men? Does it define an area... I suppose so. Would anyone know what the numbers mean? No idea...

Hence why the old 'D[x]' prevails, it says so much more, together with the sub-text...

If you read my link earlier, you will find out what the numbers refer too. The last three are the building number and that could be a block of flats or as SE pointed out a bungalow or semi-detached landed property.

I've never heard people using D-numbers in a casual conversation, except when talking to the RE agents. They are for me equally meaningful or meaningless as the postal codes. Numbers are for administrative purposes and may not make any sense especially in a developing city.

I believe most people do very well referring to Orchard, or Tanglin area, or Holland, or Chua Chu Kang, or Ang Mo Kio. These are the real life districts.

Well ya know the property search function on this website still requires input/search-criteria by the 'old' district number'... :) Mebbe you're just before our time ;)

For OP's discussion, condo names and location names would be helpful. Granted, we are all not RE agents so we may not know all the names of the condos available at a particular area (district) but we can definitely help with location names. The RE search section in this forum will do the rest of the job to find out condo names.

All the best in your condo search, OP. Come back here and ask if you have specific questions after you looked around.

I agree , I haven't a clue what any of the D numbers mean or where they pertain to.

Just go by place names as you say , its a lot easier for folks like me. :D

First complement on today and from quite unexpected direction. Or should it be meant, young because they still have the flexibility to adapt?

Take something straight-forward and free, make it half as good and charge a $xx/mo subscription for it (T+Cs apply).

Hehehe..... oh yes, 'that's progress'. ;) :)

Thought I'd post a quick update now that I've been here for a few weeks...

Ended up finding a three bed place in a condo off Holland Rd. I have to admit that it was not where I'd envisaged staying when I first started my search. I know that it's old-expatville and I really wanted to live on the East Coast, but in the end the condo and the unit itself won out. I'm near enough to town - 30 minute bus ride to work - near enough to walk to bars/restaurants and I love the condo and facilities.

I'm grateful for all of the suggestions from users on this board. It can be a daunting experience trying to work out where to live when you're new here, so it really helped.
