I don't. Yes I do when buying an appreciable asset like an apartment, but not for a depreciable asset like a car. A car is an expense, full stop, and should only be looked at as cost per annum/mile as the case may be. I don't ever consider an appreciable asset as having $0 value, but I always consider a depreciable asset like a "new" car as having $0 value at the end of it's useful life. Sadly, you cannot do that here in Sillypore.

I can never get myself to putting a resale value for electronic or electrical items.

Technology movies pretty fast

Back home, I had a Motorola 9800, cost nearly 1500s$ at that time,, and when we had a new Telco setting up, the previous monopoly company decided to give away the 9800 for free with no obligations, all on AMPS network. I remember sarcastically asking our company accountant how the depreciation is going, when is paper is worth x $ but the market rate is zero $

And when it comes to electrical or electronic stuff, because it lasted 3 years with you doesn't mean it will last another 3 years with me, even if I am careful in using it...

Which app do you use for maps? I miss streetdirectory which is available on android. Here maps is okay, but not gr8.

This lack of apps thing is okay for a mid range phone, but if I were to buy a flagship, I would skip Lumia.
Here Maps, its not that bad, plus i use my instinct to get around in Singapore lol

My wife and I bought Galaxy 3 and Iphone 5 together some 3 yrs back. We paid 500+ for G3 and 475 for Iphone5.

2 yrs later, I sold Iphone for 300 and G3 for 100. Both in excellent condition.

If you factor in the resale value of Iphones, it comes out to be the same cost as many other phones in the market.

Personally, I will always look at VFM, if I get a brand new Iphone 5s for $200 I would buy it. My Lumia cost me less than that.
My ASUS cost less than 200 .. but I digress ... ;).

When galaxy S3 was released, Samsung was on top and Apple was behind. But after that Samsung just lost its way, both S4 and S5 are not really major upgrades. They should have brought the S6 edge much before apple released the iphone 6. The delay has cost Samsung a lot amd they let apple cover lost ground. Plenty of people have upgraded to the iphone 6 now. The Galaxy S6 is at least 1 year late.

But now if I have to buy S6 v/s iPhone 6, its a tough choice. The S6 is much nicer.

2. My point is for those people whose only argument is that Iphones are costly n not worth the price. For such people, if they factor in the future resale value , it may make sense to buy iphones.
Dont just argue for the heck of it. I dont care what phone u buy or how long u use. Just that the expense should not be a deal breaker when considering an Iphone.

No.
I assume (here) cars depreciates over about a 10 year curve, perhaps 50% of it in the first 2 years. Hence why our totally road-worthy and otherwise spiffy 10-YO car here is technically worth only the scrappage COE rebate, about $6k. [They demand I recycle tin cans, yet force me to scrap a perfectly good car.... it's, er... confirmation of most things I think about the futility of 'recycling'].
So, in accountancy terms, you have an asset, and it has a recognised 'asset life'. After say 10 years the car is 'written-off' as nil book value.
Apartments. Come come young man, we know they never lose value (;) lol). On this belief SG is founded :)
I buy a phone with the idea that like an Italian car, once you've driven it off the forecourt it's immediately depreciated 90%. ... er, this is one reason I'm unlikely to ever buy a new car...

So all these upgrades. When I call my mother in law, will one of these spiffy new phones make her sound any happier?

I read the first sentence that when S3 was launched, Samsung was ahead. Are you kidding me ?

Samsung had bigger phones in terms of screen size but they were never ahead of Apple phones.

Apple took time and launched big gerphones. If you consider launching half baked products earlier as being ahead, then thats different. Now that apple has bigger phones, lots of people are switching back.

I guess most people here are looking at quantity for the price they paid, such as bigger screens, more RAM, mode hard disk, addition of microsd and still cheaper price as being ahead.

Galaxy S6 Edge is beautiful, especially the platinum gold one.

Coupled with a better camera than iPhone 6 and the spectacular display, anyone considering of switching to Android should take a serious look at this phone.

The idea that a phone might be 'beautiful', above and beyond a mere utility. .... it's just a little box banged together in a Chinese sweat-shop by slave-labour.

Lost on me.... I gone downtown now buy Lorex or Caltiers

Yep, I had no idea that everything we read on Google, Internet and TechRadar is true.

We have used Iphone5 and GS3 at the same time and I know which one is better. And I worked at Samsung so I know how innovative they are.

Ok, this has got to stop.

We don't need a freaking religious war in here.

Smartphone platform choice now has become a religion. And religion is like a penis--good on you for having one but you don't have to shove it down people's throats.
