I'm similiar - I like the reliability that comes with Apple but it is at the expense of freedom. I attended an info session at work on mobile development. Testing for Android was so much more complex because of all the different phones and variations that needed to be covered. That explained why the iPhone version of inhouse software was released months before the Android version, all down to the testing cycle.

The freedom part used to be the big issue for me but to be honest it's much better these days. As a family we can share all the photographs, video and movie content among all our laptops, iPads and phones and there is software available to extract iTunes purchases into a different format to play on other personal devices or just to ensure nothing is lost if something monumental goes wrong with iTunes.
As for the non phone side. I have said it before and will say it again. For 5 years I spent an inordinate amount of time fixing software issues on my daughters Windows laptop. In the last 10 years spanning three Apple laptops (should only have been two she dropped one down a flight of stairs!) I have not touched the software once. Not one significant software issue in 10 years.
Anyway I digress this has moved far away from the OP's original post sorry

I probably would have got more than that for it if I had bothered to advertise on eBay. I think the OP has low balled the value but still the resale value is not going to meet what he originally paid.
I used to be anti Apple but now pretty much all of our equipment comes from them. Most of the Android phones I have had drain the battery as fast as pints of beer going down at an Eagles gathering and don't even get me started on the pile of cr*p Microsoft calls an OS!
I have sold a phone that I got on contract from singtel and opened to check. I sold it on gumtree for 10% lower than the lowest retail price. I find Singaporeans pretty cool with buying used products. Bought and sold tons of things online including motorcycles.
Regarding, your comment on msft, I use a Lumia phone, the h/w and is are pretty good, what is lacking is apps and the fact that some common apps on windows don't get update soon enough, for example WhatsApp on windows still doesn't have voice call option, my wife's android has it from like 2 months already.

My WhatsApp on "Symbian" has voice calling for more than a month or so ...

Most Europeans in my office have Nokia Lumia phones, they are all well paid mind you and they are not cheapo (like me

). I guess there is still very high loyalty towards Nokia in Europe.
Personally, I will always look at VFM, if I get a brand new Iphone 5s for $200 I would buy it. My Lumia cost me less than that.

I have a windows phone as well, Lumia 1020, I have no problems with it, and my apps work just fine, its just like WD40 said, the updates for some apps take longer than usual, but its not a big deal, I will not sell my soul to Apple or Google.
To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

Which app do you use for maps? I miss streetdirectory which is available on android. Here maps is okay, but not gr8.
This lack of apps thing is okay for a mid range phone, but if I were to buy a flagship, I would skip Lumia.

Even though Iphone costs more, it performs better and has a higher resale value.
My wife and I bought Galaxy 3 and Iphone 5 together some 3 yrs back. We paid 500+ for G3 and 475 for Iphone5.
2 yrs later, I sold Iphone for 300 and G3 for 100. Both in excellent condition.
If you factor in the resale value of Iphones, it comes out to be the same cost as many other phones in the market.

so... you buy a phone, and are facturing in what it's future resale value might be?
Jeez I buy one, expect to use it for maybe 10 years, then give it charity.
Good grief, call me old fashioned, but.... sounds like an expensive habit.

10 years? That would good going in this day and age. My iPhone is about 2 years old and already the front button doesn't work. I doubt it will make 8 more years.
Actually thinking about this, I have a first generation Touch which must be about 8 years old now. I only use it on flights for music and have never updated the software, so it never slowed down. It's so old I can only run the pre-installed apps but it does what I need. Okay, perhaps 10 years is possible.

I'm on my 3rd phone. The first was a Motorola 'mini-brick' phone I bought here in 1994... then the height of sophistication

I'm on my 4th at the moment. My first was the virtually indestructible Nokia 5130? Can't remember the model number for sure but it was the old PCN network and Singtel finally had to force me to buy a new phone as I finally ran out of extensions so the PCN network was finally shut down forcing me to buy a new phone which I didn't buy, but was the L6 candybar motorola which was also virtually indestructible (and free) with the upgrade. After 8 years I switched to a Samsung SII when I left Singtel and ported over to Starhub. My wife is using it today after I upgraded to the Samsung Note 4 after using the SII for 4 years (but it's being used more heavily now with my wife than I ever used it. We'll see how long the Note4 goes.

2 points:
1. Dont people do the same when they buy cars and apartments ? Factor in future value
2. My point is for those people whose only argument is that Iphones are costly n not worth the price. For such people, if they factor in the future resale value , it may make sense to buy iphones.
Dont just argue for the heck of it. I dont care what phone u buy or how long u use. Just that the expense should not be a deal breaker when considering an Iphone.
