Re: Forum Upgrading

Post by Pal » Tue, 05 May 2015 11:06 pm

Believe me, I would love to have only ONE notification per topic. It is stated in the email as such "You are receiving this notification because you are watching the topic "Forum Upgrading" at "Singapore Expats". This topic has received a reply by JR8 since your last visit. No more notifications will be sent until you visit the topic."

But I think it isn't working on this part: "No more notifications will be sent until you visit the topic".

No, of course, I'm sure you'd wish it to be fixed, I'm just making 'user-testing' type observations :)

From what I see you're definitely right, the '"No more notifications will be sent until you visit the topic" - part is certainly not working, at least not for me.

I didn't explain that very well.

- There is the matter of 1*e-mail notification per reply in a topic in which you have participated, or are Following. Whether you have visited that topic, or indeed visited the forum.

- Last night there seemed to something else happening. There seemed to be being multiple e-mails sent out, just for one single new post in a topic.
For example: The last post in the Music topic is 'Re: Music Postby Brah » Tue May 05, 2015 10:17 pm'
I received the e-mail notification for that, but also six additional later ones, spread across the following 1/2 hour i.e. those six for posts which I do not believe existed >

- I was getting 'SQL Error' when trying to post last night, at around that time, in the Music and other topics. I'm unsure how these events might be connected.

... which, coincidentally, has just happened again on trying to Submit this >

'General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]
[0]
An SQL error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact the Board Administrator if this problem persists.'

---------------------

It gives me that error, and so it appears a message has not been posted, and yet apparently it has. So if you try and resubmit it, it leads to dupe posting. Coupled with the difficulty finding the 'Delete Post' button, this might explain the issue I'm experiencing.

I do experienced the duplicate email notifications, looks to be fine now after I cleared the forum cache.

I have upgraded (again) the board software at midnight, let's see if it helps to resolve some problem.

I can't find any log or occurrence of the SQL error you have encountered though, let me know if it persists.

My Firefox also act this way which is odd.

Perhaps after initial page is loaded, the dating banner starts to load. Hence the 2 clicks to go back?

I think I have finally solved the notifications problem! =D> =D> =D>

The system is supposed to check if there is already a notification sent and if the post is UNREAD or READ. If UNREAD, then don't send another, if READ then send a new notification.

Strangely this isn't working but after I changed some settings in the database, the notification is now working like it should!

Please check on your side if this is working properly (after 15 May 2015 12:35 am, problem still exists before this time).

Sorry for the email notification flood in the past!

I have again re-set every member to receive email notification by default.

This is how the notification works:
(a) After you posted a reply / started a topic, you are subscribed to the topic
(b) Once there is a NEW post in the said topic, you receive ONE email notification
(c) If you have not read the NEW post, you will NOT receive anymore notification even if there is 100 replies
(d) After you have re-visited the topic and read the 'unread' posts, your email notification will be repeated again as mentioned in (b)

Inbox volume is certainly down... though that's not definitive proof.

Wait for everyone to get into 'work' and go on tea-break around 9.30 ;)

That's the way it's supposed to work

It looks like it's working now.
Thank you!

All of a sudden I am being subscribed to threads although I thought I had my settings turned off for this option.

Edit: My settings were magically changed to be notified when someone responds. Turned it back off... shall see what happens

Sorry, as mentioned above, "I have again re-set every member to receive email notification by default".

That is because in the past some members turned it off due to the too many notification problem. Since the problem has been solved now, I changed the settings for everyone to default. Each member of cos can turn it off again.
