Then there are a whole lot of issues to do with so-called Mother Tongue, which cannot be English.
Since when? The mother tongue is always determined by the father's race/nationality. If the father is from an English speaking country then the mother tongue will be English.
Well, you know me......... my little one was told by the school to take a "Mother Tongue" language and they didn't accept the case to only do English - I tried to explain to them that English is already a second language to me but somehow they didn't accept "Scottish" as a language  . I believe all kids must start a so-called Mother Tongue (we chose Mandarin for obvious reasons) and only later put in an application for exam results to not be included in final reports.

I know a couple of kids where there was no MT language naturally at home that got an exemption but from memory, it wasn't at all easy.

I'm one of the 1st who went to war with the MOE back in 88 over this. But, as noted, I beat them with their own rules. However, if you are from a Great Britain you should be able to beat them with the accepted Lingua franca of GB as being your National mother tongue (if your are the father). I'd say there is a strong case there worth 'pushing' for. Of course, the downside is they may just tell you that they no longer have any places available. :-(
