Cost of Living in Singapore with Child

Post by palsub » Thu, 26 Mar 2015 11:28 pm

Friends, thanks in advance for your help and feedback. I am trying to budget the cost of living in Singapore for a family with 1 child and 1 earner with an approximate gross annual salary of USD $150000.

Monthly Budget
=============
Rent $4000 - 5000.00
Private School $2500.00
Transport $300.00
Taxi $400.00
Utils (Cable,Internet, Cell, Water, Gas,Heat) $700.00
Food $1000.00
Misc. $2000.00

Is the budget above a reasonable budget or a reasonable for comfortable living based on the salary above.

Appreciate your thoughts/feedback.

Thanks
Paul

I wish numbeo would just sponsor us already.

YMMV but it's a good place to start.

You forgot tax (I assume you are American since you quoted USD) and trips back home/vacations.
Taxis seems low but depends on the frequency and where you stay.
Utility seems high to me. I paid $50 for mobile, $50 for internet, $50 for cable and about $200 for water & electricity.
Food seems low, assuming you are not going to eat in a hawker center everyday. Groceries can be expensive in a supermarket but much cheaper if you buy from a wet market or NTUC.

Relatively speaking, I think your food budget needs to be higher compared to rent. If you're a Whole Foods type of grocery shopper and seek the same quality then you'll end up spending a lot every month just on groceries, before you even start on cafes and restaurants.

Meanwhile US$4000-5000 will get you great 2 bedroom apartments or very nice 3 bedrooms in most areas of Singapore.

Taxi budget is probably OK but really depends on how you plan to get around.

Regarding schools, make sure your budget includes school transport if relevant. The charge for private school bus shuttles is a frequently "unexpected" cost/complaint amongst parents.

Suggestion: Use the 'Where should I/we live' template...

That also requires you to paint a picture of your current standard of living. Without which, 'I've been offered $xyz-K' is un-benchmarked, hence meaningless, and unanswerable.

My feedback: 2 adults, 2 kids, 1 helper

Your rent budget will get you a decent place.
Private school: on target.
Transport: My wife and I take MRT everyday to work, and most places. We rarely take taxies.
My daughter's preschool is walking distance from condo. My son's stupid bus is apx 2k a year. Outside his bus, I think we spend less then $200 a month on transportation total.
Utilities: Mine are a bit less then that, and we have to run aircon most of the time because our condo gets no breeze and is on a semi loud street. But that budget should cover you.
Food: We have our maid cook most of our meals and shop at Sheng Siong or Fairprice. My wife and I eat out for lunch and so we're probably closer to $1200. We also have 2 more people then you. I think 1k is modest. We eat out at a resturant maybe once or twice a month.

Don't forget to budget for taxes, trips home, savings, and of course vacations around the area.

our utilities for 2 people is around 100-150 pub monthly. my husband is the only one who's working. and he's usually out of our flat from 7am - 8pm. we use the aircon every night for 8-10 hours. i have my TV, light, fan, laptop -- on from 11am to 2am. we cook almost everyday and do laundry at home every other day :)

Good question. Perhaps they use it as a fan or lego figurines stand.
