Bringing case of wine on the plane

Post by dksid » Thu, 12 Mar 2015 10:51 am

We are moving to SG in a couple weeks. My employer will not ship our wine. Does anyone know if we can check a case or two? I know there is a duty, and we are willing to pay it. I'm just not sure if we can check it like our luggage. Thanks!

In a good case as check in (not carry-on) it should be ok.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.

Thank you. Does anyone know if there is a limit to how many bottles we can bring as checked luggage?

18KG a case... ouch, that's going to be some excess baggage.

Really? You have to list all the boxes to your employers? We had a few cases of alcohol etc. The packers packed it for us and labelled the boxes as kitchenware/toileteries/bathroom or something like that.
18kg isn't bad considering allowance is 40kg on business class, isnt it.

You should check with the airline.
You will need to know what requirements they have before showing up, unless you have a good friend that can take it all back for you if the airline won't accept your packing.

As for the duty, from the customs.gov.sg website,
http://www.customs.gov.sg/leftNav/trad/ ... Goods.html:

Duty = Total quantity in litre x $88.00 x % of alcoholic strength

Thus, your wine duty likely will be $8-10 per 750 ml bottle.

Customs will want to look at the label of each bottle to check the %alcohol to determine the duty.
You are allowed 1 litre each of spirits, wine and beer or 2 litres of wine and 1 of beer per adult duty free.
(We usually get this at the duty free shop between immigration and customs on arrival.)

Perhaps you should invite all your friends for a wine-tasting send-off party for yourself before you pack to minimise the load.

By the way, you may need to consider getting a wine refrigerator here if you like to keep a lot of good wine on hand.

Some specialty wine businesses ship via air.
Have a delivery coming tomorrow that was ordered yesterday.
