Old photos

Post by JR8 » Sat, 07 Mar 2015 9:58 pm

I posted some a while back from SG many years ago, c1990. I don't know what thread that was, so since I've unearthed a couple more pix I've started another topic...

This was Arab Street, and using Streetview the best candidate for what I can guess stands on the junction today.

Also on Arab Street, but can't figure where: 'Rad Son Radio Co'.

p.s. It seems the business has moved to nearby 'Blk 1 Maude Rd #01-32' .... I can see it on Streetview, but not clearly enough to paste a pic of it...

Remembering these things stems from discussing last night what the GPO looked like internally before it morphed into the Fullerton Hotel. I don't seem to have any pix of that, though I recall it being a zoo of a place, akin the ticketing hall of a major-city Indian railway station.

This blog-post has some pix! ...

a question on old photos. (a) I have tons here old photos. anyone knows who can transfer these into a usb something like that? (b) back in london lies suitcases upon suitcases of old photos as well as projector type photos (the name of it escapes me at the moment). do you think that I can get it all digitalised onto a usb or something like that? and anyone knows where?

a) If you have a scanner, it might be an ideal pocket-money type job for a teenager. It's easy enough, just a little time consuming.

bii) aka slides. They can certainly be digitised. You can get a hardware peripheral to do precisely that. Or pay to have a company do it for you.

I got my 20-odd old Hi-8 home-vids digitised onto DVD. Money well spent, it's been hilarious watching some of them again :) For example one of first moving to SG, then life around the condo, morphing into a night out with the boys in SG 20 years ago in the vicinity of Desker Road. It's not only how SG has changed (or hasn't, the smog was terrible then!), it's how I've changed too, that is the most astonishing for me :)

p.s. Projectors/slides are old hat these days. The latter are $$, replacing bulbs if tricky and $$ too. To cap it off, you don't have 'slide shows' like back then. But digitising them and running a double-time screening via a TV seems to still hold attention.

--- For my Hi8 tapes, I used https://www.video2dvdtransfers.co.uk/ and was very happy with the service/pricing. IIRC they had begun as a home-based business and then grown to a unit in a local business park. What I liked was the sense of getting a personal service, esp. considering the sentimental value of what I was sending to them (from SG!). You could contact them and say you have some old film and vid, and ask if they also do pix and slides, and if not can they suggest anyone who can. ...
