UK (Scotland) to Singapore in August 2015

Post by olibear » Tue, 10 Feb 2015 7:47 pm

Hi everyone,

Apologies, as I have read through a lot of similar threads and have a couple of questions which I can't find reliable answers to.

Can anyone recommend a good shipping / reliable shipping company. I have scanned the net, but would prefer a "been there, done that" response from someone else.

My wife and I are debating what to bring and considering at the minute
  • Tvs, mattresses, (potentially) couch, kitchen items
Can anyone give me a definitive don't be silly, leave it at home

What sort of prices were people here paying for their shipping?

Thanks

Hi Oilbear,

We moved over from Manchester last August and used a company called Anglo Pacific, they were vey good. Came to our house packed up all our gear and were on their way in a little over 2 hours. Our shipping arrived about 10 weeks later safeand sound.( Packed on 14th June, delivered on 30th August )
We filled a transit-sized van with our gear and I believe it cost around £1000 (paid for in moving expenses but I will check for you tomorrow)
In terms of what to bring or leave i think that depends how much you like your furniture in the house your in and more importantly the size and style of the place you'll be moving to when you get here. We decided to make a fresh start of it so only bought a couple of favourite pieces of smallish furniture ( chairs and coffe table) the rest was bikes, tv, kitchen gadgets, books, clothes, toiletries etc. hope this helps and feel free to ask for any other info.

Thanks, that's great

Was that £1K total?

We are just weighing up whether it makes sense to send over our mattresses. As part of my contract, I have money to spend on moving, so we are as well using it to send 'stuff'

It's just whether it makes any sense to send it!

Thanks for indicating the 10 weeks too, that will help a lot.

I've used Anglo-Pacific and they were fine. Also KC Dat (who are considered v good). Also Allied Pickfords, and Crown, or what's now called Crown Pacific IIRC. Note that most companies have partnership agreements, such that you say pack up at home with company 1, it's shipped and company 2 does this end of things, and vice versa.

There is a separate topic, or 'Sticky Topic', likely in the Relo sub-group titled 'What to bring'. Here ... http://forum.singaporeexpats.com/viewtopic.php?t=103156. That discusses the pros and cons and covers stuff like sofas, beds, etc. IIRC. Give it a scan and see if it helps, if those 'bulky items' aren't specifically discussed then say so, as there are some downsides to simply shipping everything, then having to chuck stuff out when it either won't fit, or it's provided in the rental here.

- Could the funds to move stuff be morphed into 'funds to move stuff and funds to store stuff back home'? If so that might simplify things for you.

Thanks JR8,

The money is for shipping specifically unfortunately!

I will have a look at the forum, thanks!

Just a word of caution on shipping mattresses.

Europe and Singapore have different standard size of mattresses.

e.g.
UK King Size = 180cm X 200cm
SG King Size = 183cm X 190cm

So finding sheets that fit is one (minor) issue, but finding a bedframe that fits is harder. Also, accommodation here is generally smaller and not all master rooms will fit a King size, even an SG king without feeling cramped.
