No more public drinking and retail of alcohol post 10.30pm?

Post by AngMoG » Mon, 19 Jan 2015 8:24 pm

Just saw this pop up on my newsfeed today: Proposed law will ban alcohol retail sales in Singapore from 10:30pm
A new bill introduced in Singapore's Parliament on Monday plans to ban public consumption and retail sale of alcoholic drinks from 10:30pm to 7am islandwide.

Once the Liquor Control Bill is passed, Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will require parties holding events involving alcohol to apply for a permit to carry the drinks at their events — these include people holding parties at public barbecue pits, public void decks and countdown beach parties, for example.
I am so glad I moved away now ;)

Of course the usual anti-foreigner comments:
The Problem creater is still at large and the Ants gets the brush. Giving Authorised Liquor/Tobbaco Licenses to Foreigners was the very 1st mistake.

They clearly aim at drinking in public as of the Little India riot scenario so I don't think it will hurt too much.

Besides, we should remember, it is an evil thing.

How can foreigners own a shop and have a liquor license? Or do they mean PRs?

That's all this is also. Any bar, restaurant, or even coffee shop will still be allowed to sell. Except in Geylang and Little India, where the hours are earlier. Apparently buying liquor at 7-11 is a big enough thing that this matters and I didn't realize.

As a commenter pointed out, what about hawker stalls?

(rhetorical question)

As in official gahmen hawker center? Or the private coffee shops? The latter already have liquor license in theory, and you'd be able to drink only on their premises. The shittytimes has like three different articles that each covered a portion of this, one of the three mentioned that.

Aye, get it down the hatch double-time. Or do what the Norwegians do buy enough stock for home so that you'll always have plenty, that way the license hours don't matter (but it has arguably turned them into an even harder-drinking country).

Glad I don't own stock in the local 7-11 franchise. And what are high-rolling visitors faced with this going to make of it... :-k

what does this mean though in real life?
does this mean that I cannot buy from 7-11 or wherever after 10.30pm? what about I bought it before 10.30pm and sat about at hawker's stall or on a bridge or on a patch of grass and started drinking with my mates after 10.30?

They're not allowed to sell, and you're not allowed to drink it outside in public areas.

Unless you're a teenager or a foreign worker, I don't see this being an issue outside of late-night barbecues at the park or beach. Even then, for the few that go past 10:30 there is an optional alcohol permit you can also obtain to keep drinking.

I don't know. Apparently after one of the recent Eagle's gathering, there was an impromptu 'after-party' on 7-11 take-out beer along the quieter end of Boat Quay, that continued until sunrise.

Me thinks most people would still prefer to go to another pub rather than to do it on a curb (not that I have anything against). As I said earlier, I don't see it affecting the standard gather-drink-enjoy flow too much. In many countries there are local or country-wide laws preventing people drinking in public places anyway and any time of the day.
