Just came across this little gem today: If you aren’t Chinese, you can’t compete in Singapore

Something that frankly I wasn't aware of... so if you run a restaurant or a beauty shop, you can employ locals, PRs, Chinese, Taiwanese, Koreans and Malays for you low-wage jobs. But no Indians or others on WP - only on S-Pass or EP (if you pay enough for that).

Seems a bit strange to single out a few origin countries for WP for the service sector. Well, not so strange if you think about racial quotas, really

Good thing for the employees from other countries, not-so-good thing for the companies. However, I have thought about this before - those service companies in Singapore are living on borrowed time. In a country where you would basically need at least S$1,500 to just survive normally, paying employees less than that cannot go well in the long run. They have to pay more competitive wages, which then also results in higher cost of services - say goodbye to your $2 chicken rice

Non-NAS/PRC/Malays are entirely exempted from obtaining work passes in the services sector as defined by MoM. Not sure how that's not racist.

They need an S-Pass not an EP, but its lopsided isn't it? a Chinese establishment would have fewer bottlenecks to do business, they can get cheap easy labor from china. whereas for say an Indian one it'll be that much more expensive.

They need an S-Pass not an EP, but its lopsided isn't it? a Chinese establishment would have fewer bottlenecks to do business, they can get cheap easy labor from china. whereas for say an Indian one it'll be that much more expensive.

From my experience, and I am big time Indian restaurant foodie, most of the Indian restaurant staff are Indians, I do see a few PRCs but they dont take orders, they at best bring food from the kitchen to the table or clean tables. Also the waiters that take orders look pretty well off, they definitely seem S Pass category or PRs and definitely not the work permit league.

The waiters at the Local Indian restaurants though, I am pretty sure most are Malaysian Indians. From the article the author calls her self "Born and Bred Singaporean", I am guessing she is mainly talking about these Local Indian restaurants. Their prices are low, they sell roti prata for like $1.50. Thats very difficult business. The Expat Indian restaurants on Syed Alwi road or else where seem to always be brisk with business and doing pretty good, I think they can afford to pay S-Pass salaries to their staff.

^^ which is what most of them are doing anyway, I was surprised to see some prc dude selling vadai in one if the stalls, the chap seemed to enjoy his work actually never mind how he pronounced various Indian food.
