Oh man, this remind me two years back if I can recall. Is very irritating and painful disrupt my sleep and daily life, went to neighbourhood clinic still cannot heal and went to polytechnic. Finally it heal I even book appointment at Tan Kok Seng Hospital online to see ear specialist.
Basically the Specialist told me why I happen got ear inflection perhaps due to swimming. I told him I swim a lot. He told me the water get into the ear and perhaps infected my ear. He told me always dry the ear , no need use those cotton butt. In fact is not advisable to use , basically if want just clean the outer layer don't push deep inside or else the wax will go deep. In fact I do read about it that ear wax is a protection layer for the ear.
In the end he give me " ear toilet " suck out those dirty wax. Feel great the feeling lol. He even told me now listen more clearly right? " joke with me " . Total cost man is 100+ stated " ear toilet "

Re: Ear infections
I used to get this so often back when I was living in England. I put the blame on the pollen (always worse in Spring). The GP prescribed me with Otomize ear spray (not drops). It was so effective. It really dried up the ear. It's prescription-only though
