It would be nice if you actually added some context to what the link is about. As is, looks like you're just trying to stir up some trouble.

For everyone else:

Well-qualified caucasian is being appointed as head of NUS's Chinese Studies department. He speaks Mandarin and Hokkien. He probably really is better qualified than most other candidates. Quite ironic IMO. :)

Looks like pot stirring to me.

Or a journalist or someone waiting for juicy replies to post in other forums so that the locals would hate foreigners more.

A solid fishing expedition .......... doesnt look to be getting any bites though.

Personally I am not sure what the big deal is , the guy seems qualified for the role to me.

Dog knows, the local version, Sinderin, cannot be understood by the average PRC so someone educated in Taiwan and points north would almost have to be better than what is locally available. More fuel, anybody?

Can't you tell from the nick, it is me, EF! You guys have too much drama, for a bunch of men :P . Ok, ok, maybe the cryptic post did not help me too much. The world has opened up a lot. So many more possibilities and opportunities that were previously not easily accessible.

We don't get to pick the culture and country we are born into. You can be an expert in any language or country that you set your mind on. I have met non-Chinese who are better at the language then I am. So am I supposed to feel embarassed about it? Like I said, I did not choose to be born into a Chinese Singaporean family.

Hey EF, did you manage to sign into your account? I think admin has already ironed out the bugs that caused some regulars being unable to sign in. :P

Shouldn't this be followed by a question mark?

I would have thought an exclamation point would have been more appropriate.
