I'm moving alone from England to Singapore in January 2015

Post by Alasdair » Sun, 26 Oct 2014 3:45 am

Hi to everyone already out there...

My name is Alasdair, I'm a 29 year old guy moving to Singapore in Jan due to a job offer. I know a lot about the country in general from my work but have never actually been there. I'm already getting excited about the relocation but won't know anybody when I arrive. I was wondering if there is a good way to meet new people and socialise when I get there? I read a post on a different forum that recommended joining this website as a good starting point for meeting others in a similar situation or who have already moved out there.

So here I am, I hope you have some words of wisdom and maybe we can have a beer when I get there...

Al :)

Welcome!

There are loads of opportunities here for you to make friends and expand your social horizons! I'd start by looking at your interests and then googling for clubs. There are plenty of football/rugby/cricket/dragon-boating clubs which all have full social calendars. As a relative newcomer to Singapore I can say that from my own experience people are more open and welcoming of new arrivals as most have been in the same boat!

HI there,

There are tons of social groups in Singapore to fit your social needs. Just google them and choose Singapore as location. Have fun.

Cheers

welcome to Singapore!
beer prices can vary from $2.50 a can of tiger to 15$ for a pint of Stella/Hoegaarden/IPA/Guiness
It all depends on where you want the beer and how deep your pockets go.
To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

Yep I think you just found a solid starting point, from which as little/much further socialising as you want might spring.

More generally now might be a good time for you to start scanning the forum topics such as 'What to bring' and so on, to get a heads-up on the trials and tribulations of the physical move. [You can leave other topics like 'Where to live' etc for a while yet IMHO].

Welcome to the forum!

I believe you but I'll scour SBF later to crunch the numbers to get a quantitative figure of just how much more. :P

so sad ... the name calling for 4 floors

there are two nice Thai restaurants in 2nd and 3rd floor, .. a Senor Taco at the back block and a Filipino food outlet in Basement, a decent enough Western and Halal Chicken Rice, and the Mamak Shop, plus the late evening Pizza place .. :( :(

Is the food that bad in OT ??

Thai restaurant on 4th floor in corner is very good. I used to get my haircuts on the 3rd floor. Hawker center in basement ok. Tailor shop at back near money changer not so hot... I'd never buy again. The money changer has pretty good rates. And, Ipanema is the best club, although Naughty Girl gives it a real run for the money.

That Thai restaurant is very nic, I went there a few weeks back and the thai currywas excellent!

They also sell Pork Scratchings, first time I've seen them in SG in 4 years, great for a night of rugby and beer...
