It has to be the insane amount of money to make me consider leaving my friends, my lifestyle, everything to return to the sh*thole where I hailed from.

Looks like you relocated from "the place where you hailed from" very long ago which is why you have friends and family here. So the OPs question is not applicable to you, for you home is here.

But, if you had relocated, say 4-5 years ago and you had your friends and family in the place where you hailed from, would you still call it a sh*t hole?
