Apps for calling overseas?

Post by Wd40 » Fri, 10 Oct 2014 3:37 pm

I was a Singtel prepaid user for a long time and I always used Hot 128 recharge which comes with overseas talktime.

Now that I am a postpaid user I am wondering what cheap options are available to call overseas(in my case specifically India)

I know apps like skype allow calling from Internet to mobile phones/landlines.

I just downloaded an app called Voxofon that gave some free credit for 1st time and the call quality was pretty good.I looked at their pricing and it was like 2.5c per min, that pretty cheap. I am considering using apps like these for my overseas calling needs. Any thoughts?

Make your family call you instead of you calling them :)

Altho, u can try MobileVoip . Works on smartphone as well as computer. Though, the quality nowadays is not as good as I would like it to be.

To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

10$ on singtel calling card gives roughly 10 hrs hours of talk time to India

You could do app to app calls for free, e.g. Viber, Skype, etc. but the other party will also need a smart phone or computer with the app.

singtel calling card is called Singtel World card I believe

if you buy In little India area all card sell below cost, so to say, so a 10$ card will sell for 9$ or so

try also Phoenix calling card

Skype free works fine even with lower bandwidth, if call isn't clear call at a different time ;)

PS, edited, Singtel card is Called hello card, as per RATM's link ;)

My experience with the Singtel card is pretty miserable. Mind you that's to Europe and years ago; perhaps it's better now.

I used to use Skype, but found it too inconsistent and it also slowed up my pc. So I chucked it. Again though, that was 7 years ago ish.

I now use the BIP card. Good quality and lots of bang for your buck. You get the occasional dickie card, but by and large, this is a great overseas option, albeit it untested to India. Worth a try I reckon, especially since it's priced at $10, but they'll give it to you at $8.50 if you press a bit. That's for 10 hours of phone time. Actually 11, because you get 1 bonus hour.

Edit stuffs.

Thanks guys, lots of options to try. But from what all the comments it appears the good old calling card way is still preferred compared to apps like Skype, Viber Out, Vonage etc

Wrong... much better calling prices with Skype than any calling card.

the trick is, since almost all use VOIP, try at different times

avoid regular peak like weekends

the 100,000 people heading to Little India, Orchard, Golden Mile and Peninsula make a lot of calls on their off day = congestion ..

the 150x post paid I used had rates not attractive at times but worked fine during weekends as i understood their counterparts had dedicated E1/bandwidth

And better than Skype, Google Voice. It's generally much lower than the competitors.

To use the example of India, as we know that is the only country that exists in WD40's universe outside of Tampines:
1cent per minute on GV (pay as you go)
1.5cent per minute on Skype (pay as you go)

Skype isn't cheaper unless you buy your time in blocks of 2500 minutes which expire monthly. And even then, it's only .8 cents per minute.

All USD, not SGD.

And one more, since we all know WD40 has a cousin in Australia:

GV pay as you go to Australian mobiles: 7 cents per minute to mobiles.
Skype is 8.9 cent "connection fee", then 10 cents per minute to mobiles.

Might be worth checking if Skype is still ripping people off depending on their IP address. I still recall getting much lower call rates by simply connecting to a UK VPN...
