I've experienced that too with pack ponies. The way back and they're on some kind of giddy auto-pilot, the enthusiasm increases exponentially with proximity to home (and food, and leisure). About a mile out, they become thoroughbred race-horses bolting for the finish line at full speed! Bloody hilarious if you're riding them too!
