I've experienced that too with pack ponies. You have to whip them along and feed them well on the way out, and they have that kinda 'I hate you and every moment of this, and if I can ruin your day somehow I will', look in their eye [seriously lol!].

The way back and they're on some kind of giddy auto-pilot, the enthusiasm increases exponentially with proximity to home (and food, and leisure). About a mile out, they become thoroughbred race-horses bolting for the finish line at full speed! Bloody hilarious if you're riding them too! :lol:
