My sister, in her 50's, would have a hard time finding a new job. Resigned to her fate of not having the desired "qualities" of a "successful" human being. Chinese educated, lack of English skill. In the past, she would market herself during interviews "I may not be young and pretty and lack English language skill but I am reliable and responsible. Won't be fickle like the young people ". She may not the brightest spark or has the best social skills, but she is an honest and sincere person.
I go to this simple, humble but clean place for my facial. Apparently, the owner also runs a much larger cash cow in the central area. According to my facialist, the owner hardly steps into this tiny salon. "Not worth her time as she could be churning out hundreds of $ per botox injection (or the like), whereas in this salon, the staff would have to do manual facial charging clients minicuous $ ". So you see, her line of (hard) work is not as worthy, compare to a silly needle poke. But you know what, the work that she does, is precious. It provides a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. I would fall asleep under her care. She is doing some important work and helping out her clients. I wish she could see for herself what I see in her.
So you see, it is heart-breaking to hear these kind of stories from hard-working honest-living citizens. This feeling of being under-appreciated by your own kind. As a nation, Singapore needs to grow up and learn to be accomodating of the different ways that people can contribute.
