Thank You!

Post by uscate » Thu, 18 Sep 2014 10:18 am

I've been back in the US for the last month, and wanted to thank some of my favorite posters for all of their words of wisdom and humor....

zzm, nutnut and (of course) sms....you folks were instrumental in helping me to prepare for and then acclimate to my surroundings (and special thanks to sms for giving me the real deal on my inability to be employed - although that info was painful, it really was helpful). To the lynx and x9200, your input regarding everything from giant moths to where to live to crazy cab drivers gave me lots of chuckles (and also helped immeasurably in my navigation of this crazy dot). Sergei, I hope you and your homeland find peace, and finally (but not least), thanks to JR8, who I seldom agreed with, but who I almost always found entertaining.

I wish that I could have contributed more to the discussion than info on cats and hair care (I shudder when I type that)....I truly am more than the sum of those parts, but given the level of expertise on this board, I always learned more than I could contribute....

It's great to be back in Boston (although I'm always cold, and am NOT thinking of winter), but I still find myself checking in to the Forum to see whassup on The Dot....

Thanks to you all for helping to make my time in Singapore so memorable, and all the best to you!

-Cate

Thanks Cate, but you don't have to make yourself a stranger here. This is always a home. As you have noticed, we have lots who have had to leave this little Red Dot, for one reason or the other, but they are still with us, regardless of where they are physically. I don't relish being in Boston just in time for the last hot month of summer and heading into a northeast winter. (I'm from a bit further south but just as nasty in the winter - MD).

Thank you for making all of us a part of your life. ;-)

All the best back in The States, uscate. You're always welcome here, whether in or out of the Dot! I've always enjoyed exchanging and reading your posts, especially from observing things unique in Singapore.

Don't stop posting :D

What? No love for me.

Oh yeah I forgot... arrogance and outspokeness don't make for love.

Good luck Cate.

Yes, please stay on this board. You are one of the most emotionally balanced regulars (it's a complement) and I enjoy your posts and the discussions with you. Good luck with your new IP addresses but keep on posting to the old ones.

Though I do recall SMS getting snippy a couple of times with the likes of- 'JR8, you don't even live here any more!' when he disagreed with a point I was making... lol  :P

Awwwww PNGMK….from one "cat lady" to another…. Oh, and PNGMK - Ive enjoyed reading your metamorphosis from Offshore Oil Dude to the more mellow PNGMK….and yes, I've also enjoyed your posts - even the more outspoken ones made me think and often chuckle….

I often felt as though I was in an expressionless void while living in Singapore - the Singaporeans I knew really had no opinions (that they cared to share with me) other than about shopping and food….and the expat (mostly ladies) that I met either enjoyed the opportunity to be "day drunk" a little more than I, or had kids and were wrapped up in them….So I always appreciated reading this forum - the pot stirrers (and you certainly know who you are) and the posters with just really good information about esoteric and not so esoteric topics were just a nice breath of fresh air for me.

I enjoyed my time on the little dot, and I'm sure I'll continue to stalk this board, if only to see what the buddies I've never met are up to!

Have a good day, all….we're headed to 40F (that's 4C) in the next 12 hours!!

Ain't that the thing. I don't think it's that they don't have opinions (re: matters of significance), I think it's a cultural thing that they don't really care to express them.

It's as if talking about 'serious matters' is a downer, anti-social, impolite, not fun. Hence your observation, which I share, that so often it comes down to food and shopping. Most of my local friends are like this; but, what to do, it's just how they are. This unfortunately can lead the outsider to conclude that SGns are often quite shallow as a people.

I know some worldly 'big hitting' SGn types, and even they seem to be very reticent about expressing opinions. I'd be fascinated if someone could enlighten me further of the basis for this....

I'm somewhat reminded of the Japanese who seek group consensus. Though there it is historic, cultural and inbuilt, here I suspect it's perhaps externally enforced, similar to the politics.

p.s. 4C.... brrr - no thanks!! Sometimes back home in the depths of winter I'd wear a woolly hat/beanie indoors. Try it, it really works + it saves the heating bill :)
