Transit to hospital when the birth begins

Post by Steve1960 » Mon, 04 Aug 2014 9:17 am

My wife is still a way off, we have a couple of months to go before baby is due.

However, this has been keeping me awake recently. I envisage my wife going into labour about 5pm on a Friday when it is pouring with rain outside and no taxi's.

I don't know much about the ambulance services here are they all independent or do hospitals have their own services too? Anyone with experience of an independent?

If I dial 995 when she goes into labour what service do I get? Where does the ambulance come from?

Any information gratefully accepted.

If it's keeping you up at night is it worth renting a car for two weeks?

I would have to get off my backside and do something about an SG driving license, have not bothered too date.

I could do that but it's still a bit hit and miss, our 3 year old arrived 3 weeks early.

And with a 3 month lead time for the BTT you should plan now, if you still have time. :)

Yeah, it is hit or miss. I was induced both times which is very civilized. Collect a few numbers from friends with cars, no decent person is not going to help.

If it helps, statistically, most labours start at night.

I'm pretty sure you'll be OK driving on your UK license with the rental that week. There are plenty of anecdotes posted here and some I know personally that converted their foreign license long after the posted one year grace period.

That's interesting I thought the 1 years was a hard and fast rule. Must have missed some posts on the subject.

My understanding (admittedly based on research I did a few years back) is you can convert your licence at any time but you cannot drive on a foreign licence after 1 year of residency.

995 is very good, honestly a first world Ambulance service (although the damn sinkies drivers who don't get out of the way and the stupid ass LTA who won't let the Ambo's run red lights all need to be dragged out the back and shot in the head).

But is it ludicrously expensive?

Not at all. It's free for 'urgent or critical cases' and probably $100 for others.

the price went up, from 100% years ago

plus 7% GST

oh, if you explain your problem they may re-route a private ambulance which may reach in the same time and they also have paramedics on board, some of whom are army medics in training ..

Ok well the last time I use one was in about 2009 when it was still free for critical cases.

Get Grab Taxi app on your mobile. It shows you available taxis or limos nearby and you can make your booking immediately. Try it out and see if it works for you. In the worst case scenario, there's always 995 to fall back on :)
