RedMi users~~

Post by Luna_moon rider » Wed, 23 Jul 2014 11:54 am

Heard that the RedMi phone is cheap so I bought one. But I found that there are quite a few apps having bugging problem while using RedMi, anyone can share some opinions on these?

RedMi uses Android BUT it is customized by Xiaomi.

What does that mean?

Google develops the core Android OS. Phone manufacturers then get Android, tweaks some things to make it work on their hardware (the actual phones) and change things a bit to give Android their brand's identity. Xiaomi has been accused of copying Apple and their flavor of Android (they call it MiUI) looks like iOS!

Some manufacturers change Android more than others; Motorola barely does while Samsung does it a lot. Xiaomi, as you've probably guessed does it a lot too.

Bottom line: apps bugging out may be due to what Xiaomi did to the RedMi's software. You'll have to do a lot of Googling to see if other users experience the same problems and if they have found ways to fix them.

My recommendation: if you want a cheap but good phone, get the Moto E or the Moto G. Motorola's been praised for producing these best in their class phones. Sony comes next, with HTC a close third. Skip Samsung since their cheap phones leave much to be desired.

Thx nakatago!! Pretty in-depth info, are you working in telco field?

I bought RedMi phone with two card slots for sake of saving troubles during overseas. But I am unable to receive some messages (esp. from banks) and the MIUI popped out messages to ask me to send report...which is quite frustrating...

time to change phone~

I make Android apps on the side.

You don't have to discard your phone since you can still replace the Android flavor installed on it. Just look for some techie who knows how to find and flash a custom ROM on a phone. (The exact words in bold).

Failing that, here's where you can get a Moto G: http://www.whymobile.com/productinfo.php?id=MOT-G Note that it's dual SIM.

Or a Sony http://www.mobilesquare.com.sg/products ... 700&cid=13

Both these stores are in Far East Plaza so you can go there if you don't want to do it online. I've bought phones from them and it was just a matter of which store has which phone for the better price.
