Need suggestions for medical insurance for new job

Post by VarunSuri » Sun, 29 Jun 2014 10:45 pm

I'm going to be moving to Singapore to start a new job in 3 weeks on an EP. The company will be paying for my health insurance and is proposing NTUC to be the provider.

Is this a good provider or should i insist on someone else?

I'm single at the moment but will get married in the next year and so want an insurance with the option to later extend it to my spouse.

Any help would be appreciated.

i'd say it probably doesn't matter at this point unless you've got specific issues that require additional/peculiar coverage.

NTUC's well respected (and sort of government-owned) although as with ANY insurer - your mileage may vary.

others might chime in with a different opinion... so hang on in there.

From what I know companies in Singapore provide group medical insurance and usually they tie up with Single provider and you don't have the option to change it. Also some companies provide for spouse and kid, some do not provide and some will provide if you pay the additional premium.

I was surprised to learn after I changed my company from an MNC bulge bracket Investment bank that covered my whole family to another company, the other company doesn't cover family members. I have a friend working as AVP perm employee at SGX and they don't cover for the family members of perm employees. Quite shocked actually at how pathetic even reputed local companies in Singapore are, in terms of providing benefits to employees.

then again, benefits = cost to company, especially there is no law stating what kind of medical shoud be provided

re medivcasl, it is even more hilarious for an ASEAN country's foreign labour law re their workers going overseas ... the department handling approvals can make life miserable if Burial or repatriation of mortal remains isn't spelt out but not bothering about medical etc when the person is alive
