Singapore Expats

If I buy a brand new motorbike from a local dealer, what kind of taxes I typically need to pay?

mentioning Additional Registration Fee and Excise Duty. With more expensive bikes these two add up to rather significant number (~30% OMV). This is the end user who supposed to pay it or this is paid by the importers/seller and included in the advertised price?

I believe, like a car, it's been included in the dealers price. I think you would still have to pony up the COE though.

With new bikes the dealer will most likely quote an all in price (all taxes and COE). If you're getting a quote from distributor (i..e Hong Leong) they may be quote machine price with import taxes and GST only.

Most new bike prices are quoted as all inclusive, "on the road", when I was in Singapore. Maybe that's changed with the increase in COE.

Thanks for the info. I may end up with Hong Leong as I am seriousely considering a Yamaha right now. Good to know.

You can get some seriously better deals in the used market. Far too many "carrots" get themselves into payment plans they cannot afford... you get the bike, take over the payments, they lose all down payment and payments made to date.

Just make sure that the bike is inspected by someone you trust if you don't know what to look for yourself. Check out Singapore bike forums for an extensive listing of used bikes... everything you could possibly want.

I will be likely looking for FJR1300. I've been monitoring http://www.sgbikemart.com.sg/ for already some time and there are not so many of them available. Same for the forums. I still have a few months before I buy it but looking more and more around.

Quite a jump from the Sportster 883. I thought you were looking for something relatively smaller and agile, and thus why considering a sportster?

I was considering the Sportster mostly because of the prices of the used ones. I like the look of classic bikes but FJR1300 is close to the top of my favorites. Is it that big comparing to 883? It does not appear so. It is slightly more heavy and by the footprint/dimensions it is practically the same size as my current X9.
I am pretty happy with X9 but it is about to have its COE expired and it slowly shows signs of many repairs comming. I would like to have something that I like, reliable and lasting beyond single COE renewal.

Suddenly your handle makes a lot of sense FJR1300 is big, bigger than the sportster, but I agree a much much better bike.

I just called Hong Leong, and if I got it right, it is 33k COE inclusive. I forgot to ask about GST but even if not included it is still damn good value for money for a bike like this.

Mmmm - not really... but ok. I've been in the US/Oz a lot recently - boy bikes are expensive in Singapore (and it's not just the duty and COE that can account for the gap).

It's a hurtful amount of money but it's life in Singapore. This bike in the USA ranges from $13,500 to $16,900 which is S$16,860 to S$21,105.

Ok - lets assume base price is US10,000. Duty is 100% approx to that's US20,000 = SGD25,000. Add COE of $4,000 and we have SGD29,000. Shipping and delivery prep is probably $1000. I guess $32,000 is a bit high.

Yeah, I am painfully aware of this. What I meant, if you compare to different motorbikes sold locally.
Importing seems to have low profit margin too as you showed in another post - probably 2k max. Not sure if this is worth the associated risk (buying from personally unknown source, not possible to check it before importing, possible warranty issues etc.) and all the bureaucratic troubles.
