Nothing altruistic about it. It is by far in his company's best interests for as many other electric car makers to copy these concepts and make them a standard.

I can absolutely assure you if he thought his company would make more money by being a patent troll (instead of trying to get other companies to help invest in the infrastructure required to sell more of their primary product) they'd instead have a press release about the dozen lawsuits they just filed.
