Wow!

I responded quite differently to the two.

The 1st was interesting, though the use of colour hyper-saturation, and forcing the viewers eye via a *very* narrow depth-of focus soon became tired for me. As did the rather overbearing backing music.

I wasn't going to bother with the second link, expecting more of the same...

However: Wow! The colour-tweaking is less OTT, and the depth-of-focus tweaking is barely used. You're left to enjoy the imagery as is, rather than being forcibly led by the nose. The panning vistas at altitude are very dramatic, and impressive, and despite a few views, I am still at a total loss quite how he managed to capture such shots.

So #2 definitely did it for me. If the changes from #1 to #2 reflect the evolution of this guys work, then he's someone to watch (IMHO).

Yeah, same here. I wonder if they used one of them drone jobbies.

Either way, they obviously know their stuff.

Apparently not. Reading their site and notes it would seem most were just taken from high vantage points.

Re: the first clip, the title tells you why the very narrow depth of field was used. Miniature. By using the narrow depth of field it gives the clip the feeling of looking at a miniature recreation of scenes of Singapore. An exercise, if you will. The music sucked in my opinion as well, but I liked the surreal way the images appear especially considering the clarity and colour saturation obtained. I actually appreciated the first more than the second but liked both for what each was trying to do.

I wondered the same! But then I was thinking, that to get that stability of image you'd have to have quite some sized drone or RC helicopter... and... just how welcome are people to send such things flying around downtown and the likes of MBS... hmmm

Apparently they were using a whole range of TS Canon Lens. I'm not too famliar with Tilt/Shift photography but it is used to create the miniaturization effect.

JR, I've seen clips made by a mate of mine who uses a pretty run-of-the-mill drone, nothing fancy. The footage is steady as a rock though. It's amazing what these things are capable of nowadays. I reckon they even have gyroscopes in them, apart from the rotors themselves eh.

But, yeah, legislation is imminent, surely. There's talk of them being sent up by handymen to check roofs and what have you

A moving drone can be steady with Gimbal mounts, but not *that* steady, and especially not in the low light shots which would require much slower shutter speeds.

They were probably all shot from a single tripod. You can do most of that stuff in software, you're just seeing moving crops of a much larger frame.

I did like these, much better than the other ones I've seen.

Hmmm.... Panolapse just seems to yield animation, from a single static point.

I don't see it creating an effect of flying around MBS or HDB estates at altitude.

p.s. I sent the clip/vid to a couple of local videographers I know. They specialise in TV ads, so are used to getting short and punchy visuals. They are impressed, to say the least...

Yeah, it's pwetty. I bet an up-town resort for instance, would be happy to pay a decent bag of moolah for some "fly-by" footage like that.

Edit: Edith.

He probably had a sliding mount also. Still doubt a quad-copter. Not stable enough for the shots, and the most you can get on even the priciest ones is 25-30 minutes of flight time. With the gear he used, probably a third of that. Those shots are taken over way more than 10-15 minutes.

Something like this, just mounted in the right spots:

I thought it was shot by those military jets that keep dive bombing JR8's gaff.
