Shooting Crows

They are shooting crows around Siglap at the moment.

The small family (Mum, Dad and a wee chick) that drop in for a drink from the pool each morning aren't around anymore, hopefully moved on to a safer locale.

I think it's sad, I quite like our local birds.

We have a colony in about 4 adjacent large trees. Maybe 500 birds?

Their 'dawn chorus' is unbelievable, with perhaps 250 homes in earshot. I consider it a problem, it in part determines what windows we can leave open at night.

It seems curious that they'll send out a gunman to shoot a solitary Koal, but do nothing versus 500 crows.

I remember once when the culler, standing some 30 meters away, raised his rifle to shoot a bird high above me and for that split-second it was me that was at the end of his bead. I was not a happy puppy then.

Still, shooting them beats trapping them in a cage and then pummeling them to death eh.

quotation marks aside, i believe JR was being euphemistic... i would use the term "racket" or "mofo bird din."

twice a day. for many hours. some times at the most peculiar hour...

they shoot only when complaints keep coming in... or when crows attack people.

hopefully they weren't caught in the cull and will come back later. i'm pretty sure the older ones recognize the culling van and vests... if not the equipment.

Ayuh, keep your hair on, old chap, I was referring to the crows as it happens. I know starlings and mayna do that collective ruckus thing, but wasn't aware crows do it too.

I've always wanted to the join the SSC (Shooting club) just to shoot the crows...

I looked into it during my last stint here. It's pretty bureaucratic as one might expect. As I recall it's limited to 12 gauges/bores, and skeet/trap shooting. For 'guest' shooters, copy of ID had to be provided a week in advance etc...

If you enjoy shooting I still reckon it would be enjoyable, not least seeing how they go about things here.

Maybe a few of us who are interested could consider turning it into a day out?
