Good place to have a brunch

Post by John D D » Wed, 21 May 2014 1:24 pm

Hello, I am looking for a good place to brunch in Singapore. I don't want Hotel brunch I prefer more casual style and relaxing. I have been to marmalade pantry already but it was just ok. I know Choupinette got a good stuff do you know any place?

Group Therapy Coffee is my favorite, Department of Caffeine is alright, but a bit too small and loud, I feel. Other than that, Kith Cafe's okay.

Tiong Bahru area would be...Coq & Balls, 40 hands, and Poteato.

PS Cafe @ Dempsey is a bit too overpriced, but a good casual atmosphere though. I love the place.

PS Cafe is expensive, but it is one of the few places I've gone to in Singapore where I felt the expensive Western food tasted good enough to justify its cost.

This is a decent, long list:

I've visited maybe a third and it is pretty hit or miss.

I tried Becasse in Dempsey and the husband approves. We also like Antoinette at Mandarin Orchard. Great french toast but super cold. Bring a coat if you don't want to freeze.

Rustic old hawkers centres in older estates can be quite an experience, eg Redhill, Commonwealth, Sembawang Hill.

Had a buffet at 1Market yesterday. Decent spread and almost all sections were of rather good quality, fresh, well-prepared and tasty. Nothing ran out, not even the crab legs, crayfish, oysters and what-have-you. Staff was above-average also.

Just ignore the whole Chef Wan palaver going on here and there.

Oh, and the place is not noisy. In fact, it's quiet enough to be able to chat at a volume level considered normal, which is quite rare here eh.

Indeed. With great food for a good value too. But arguably not what the OP is asking about in this post.

Some of the hotels along Scotts Road can be ok - I'm thinking Goodwood and the Royal Plaza.

Was in a place called Symmetry at Jalan Kubor (near Haji Lane area). One of the most delicious eggs benedict I ever had. If I have to compare, it is way better than Food For Thought (Botanic Garden) and Hatched (HV and Evans Road) for the relatively similar price.

Very easy to miss the place when you look for it as it has a very humble (uninteresting?) façade, which probably means they don't intend to attract walk-in customers.

You need reservations to be able to dine there.

Judging by the crowd (it has good mix of locals and foreigners), it looks like it is the kind of place that only goes by word of mouth.

Judging by the Instagram #foodporn form Singapore lately, that seems to be a popular place. How crowded was it?

Since they go by reservation in time slots, I would say full house (a little bit crowded) but comfortable enough for me to enjoy a meal, but it may be subjective to some people. For example, if for 10am slot, there are 10 4-pax tables, you will find 40 people dining at 10am.
