Moving to Singapore with the wife - Need advice on IT Jobs

Post by slimbalato » Mon, 14 Apr 2014 11:38 pm

Hi all,

I'm just looking for some advice on the market out there.

The wife is being transferred and I'm trying to figure out what's the best approach for me bearing in mind the following.

All of the jobs I'm seeing are asking for a degree etc which I do not have despite being in a mid - senior role for some very recognizable global companies. I have 25 years experience as an IT Generalist / IT manager with a very broad range of skills.

Also, I'd really love to contract / start my own support business if feasible, despite being a poor salesman!

Any (constructive) advice greatly appreciated.

Chris

Yes/No/Maybe?

After a certain level of experience, a degree becomes less relevant. Nevertheless, some companies won't hire you because of your lack of one. What is your question exactly?
- Is it possible to find a job? Certainly.
- How long will it take to find one? Anything between a month and a year or never, depending on your expectations.
- Where to look? There are several posts on this, and the job websites are not hard to find.
- Will you get a work visa? Nobody knows, but if your salary is > $8K, chances are good.

For starting a company - that is really up to you. Also read existing posts on starting a company on DP/LOC or EP.

Don't do it. Singapore is small within any given vertical. Networking is essential. Hard to break in if you don't have the contacts. If you are poor salesman... and I gather that means you don't get out and make the calls... you won't get anywhere.

IT is leaving Singapore in droves. MNC's are not only moving support roles out to cheaper locations... ie... India, Malaysia, Philippines, they are transferring IT tech experience and management elsewhere as well... either to global PMO's or to regional localizations where a specific experience exists. It's all about cost and the recent moves by the gahmen to tighten work permits has been an additional strong driver to get the hell out of Singapore. I have personally moved call centers out of Singapore to KL and Manila.

As a non Chinese guy, the chances of you breaking into local business are close to zero. It's a tight knit community, with business leaders beholden to government because of investment companies like Temasek... and... well... why the hell give it to a foreigner when there is an entire network of Chinese friends to develop and cultivate.

Yes... I have a negative view and unless you have specific, in demand skills like security (physical and logical), I don't see it.
