Internet connection problem

Post by singapore eagle » Sat, 29 Mar 2014 11:31 pm

Would anyone more technically minded than me be able to advise?

I've been having trouble with my home internet connection these last few days. Whilst surfing, webpages will keep coming up as unavailable. It won't be every page. And pages that are inaccessible will become accessible after waiting a couple of minutes. The same problem affects email apps as well, in that they temporarily can't communicate with the mail server.

It's not a device-specific problem. The 2 laptops, 2 ipads and 1 iphone in the house all have the same issue.

The odd thing is that if/when I am able to turn my vpn connection on - and there are intermittent issues with this too - everything is fine.

Any ideas? Would I be right to think that there is a problem on Starhub's side?

I think SH have been having issues......our home phone had problems since Friday but today is fine.

When I called SH yesterday for technical assistance I was on hold for 30min then when somebody picked up they told me I needed to talk to somebody else, despite following all the right options. Since call volume was 'very high' according to the girl I started to think the issue was not mine.

I had problems yesterday and it appeared to be on the Starhb side. It lasted 1-2h.
In past I had some delay related problem that lasted few days and I was able to solve it calling them. It was on their side. I found their technical support competent (or I was lucky) so I suggest to give them a call.

Same here. SH has been an unreliable pile of sh*t for the last 2-3 months.

I called SH for an unrelated tech issue. I got a first-line chap, who heard me out and then said I needed to speak to a second-line Tech chap, because their know-how is more advanced.

When I got my second-line chap at the other end, he needed to give me a URL and spelled it out out as follows: "h-t-t-p and then those 2 pointy things above and below"...

I thought he was kidding. Alas, he wasn't. The rest of the call was - predictably - a nightmare.

Something you might try is adding in some different DNS to your pc to see if that helps. Google has very good DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Also, using a good VPN can help work around this. I've been using HideMyAss and like it a lot, but there are many choices out there. If you have trouble connecting to the OpenVPN connection maybe try L2TP which is a bit less overhead.
Otherwise, I'd recommend My Republic as I've had excellent service and zero problems connecting.

Good luck!
