We bought a few decent pieces from Crate & Barrel & CB2 (yes, they are more expensive than in US but not beyond reasonableness). You can also flip through newspaper to see whats the "deal" of the week. Every Sat, I noticed that there is always a certain "theme" of the week, sometimes its travel, sometimes its furntures, sometimes its household appliances, etc. We also bought a spare bed with storage space below, from a mattress shop in Tan Boon Liat Building (there is a few other furnishing shops around, so you can go down and take a look).
If you don't mind second hand furnitures, do check craiglist and gumtree for furnitures of expats leaving Singapore.
