Foreigner seeking internships in Singapore this May

Post by pleaseplease » Sat, 22 Feb 2014 4:09 am

Hi all,

I'm doing my last semester of my 2nd year in uni in North America and I'm Malaysian, but I have plans to come home to Malaysia during my break in May-August this year and I wanted to do an internship in Singapore during that time period for various reasons.

I'm doing economics now and I'm looking to apply for any business administrative, PR, marketing, business development, HR intern positions etc.

So I've been trying very hard since the beginning of the year to apply for internships on many online platforms and though I've had a couple of skype interviews, I have a feeling it's hard to land a position because none of them got back to me considering that:

1) I'm not in Asia at the moment
2) I need to apply for an employment work permit/training pass/work permit which is rather time consuming and I don't even know which category I'm specified under
3) It's already the end of February and I am expecting to start work in May so there really is a choke on time here unless I get a 1-2 months internship instead so I can start later (June or July) and have more time (then again the whole work permit process is a headache)

What are some things I should keep in mind and what are the next steps that I should take because I really really am desperate to get this through and it's really disheartening because I've been trying so hard :(

Do I still have time to apply for jobs (and the pass)?
What are the odds of me getting approved for the permit and if not, how/what should I do?

Any thoughts or inputs are greatly appreciated and thank you all for your time, I really just need this 3 months, or 2.. in Singapore :(

have you looked into the youth working visa for Singapore?

Oops doesn't apply for MY citizens.

The problem with an internship is you're asking a local employer to give up an S Pass or whatever for a temporary intern AND pay him the rate for an S/E/P1/P2 pass at the same time. It's not going to work I suspect. Find an internship in another country or Malaysia.

There is no obvious visa here for what you want.

With my situation I was thinking I would have to apply for this work permit http://www.mom.gov.sg/foreign-manpower/ ... rview.aspx

Sorry I'm not quite sure what you meant but anyways I just want to get the experience there and so far I've seen most of the internships pay between $400-$800 :l

Ah.. Thank you for your input I appreciate it

As an intern, MOM will not expect you to be a replacement (in terms of roles and salary) for any full time employee.

The Work Holiday Programme (WHP) is only one type of internship visa, for students from a select group of partner countries. There are training passes that are possible for other nationalities.

I do know of interns from Asian countries obtaining training employment passes for their 3-6 months internships which paid ~ $800 per month.

Oh that's nice to hear..

I'm also afraid that since its 2 months+ before I return to Asia, companies would find it troublesome and a little rushed to go through the whole process for me.

Anyhoo, thank you for your comments!
