If you do the theory test to convert your license and you fail can you still drive if you have been here less than a year?

It would appear so. You have the year to obtain a SG license and your current non-SG license remains valid.

I probably should have asked before I drove myself to my test!

You may be laughing at it but when I was taking the traffic police final test some local guys came by their own motorbikes.

Hah! Yeah you should be able to continue driving with your non-Singaporean driving license up to 12 months. Are you going to redo the test?

No, I passed. I just wondered what would have happened if I hadn't because I hadn't planned another way to get my car home.

If you wouldn't have passed, the best option might have been to register immediately to retake the test and then keep the registration form in your car to show police (if you're stopped) that you have an appointment to test. It at least shows you're trying to comply with the law. I don't know if police cars are equipped with databases that contain lists of people who've failed the tests.

Yeah that sounds like my wife who drove to Ubi police station to renew her expired Singapore drivers license....
(and she's been here 5+ years and has NO other valid license now).
Thank God she didn't crash.

Hannie was still within her 12 month right of driving here using her foreign license. Is there any specific law saying that failing the test revokes that right? I doubt so.

It's a weird system. To my mind if you fail then you're off the road.

But you were allowed to drive for 1y regardless the knowledge required by the basic theory test. This was unconditional and they could have not expected anybody had such knowledge right from the start. In that sense the failure changes absolutely nothing to the status quo. Ii is IMHO not to test some earlier assumed skills but to fulfill a formal requirement.

It is a silly system. Either convert without a test or don't allow people to drive at all before it. It's a bit scary that somebody could turn up with a license from a country that requires little and then drive here.
Obviously I now consider myself fully integrated and no longer use my indicators or leave a decent stopping between myself and the car in front.

Don't forget to stop 20 m before the traffic lights so the sensors don't pick you up.... and never pull away in a hurry.
