Party favors: necessary or not?

Post by BedokAmerican » Sun, 16 Feb 2014 3:38 pm

My child turns 2 soon and a mix of expats and locals with kids between ages 1 and 4 are planning to attend the birthday party. The plan is to have cupcakes and play. On the invite, I told them not to bring presents. (He has enough gifts from family.)

I know party favors are kind of a tradition, but it seems many small things that would fit in a "goody bag" are choking hazards because young kids naturally put stuff in their mouths, and snacks/food might not fit every kid's dietary regimen or taste preference.

Maybe I'm overthinking this. I don't know. I know it's common to skip the presents nowadays, but it seems everybody still gives out party favors.

Would I be committing a major faux pas if I skipped the party favors? I realize kids that age probably won't notice. But what do you, as parents, think?

If you find them annoying as I did, find a way to skip them or minimize or incorporate as a party activity. As I write this I remember that you are talking about a very young party. Didn't do a kids party until 4 or 5 years old. So the. Kids may have decorated cookies and took their creations home, or same with cupcakes, or started a bead project that they took home to finish.

My favorite parties are those without party bags. Too much goes into the garbage within 24 hours.

Do we really need more junky little things cluttering up our lives?

Be brave and buck the trend.
