Does not having a degree stop me from being considered?

Post by RossDavidson » Sat, 15 Feb 2014 2:15 am

Hi all, I have a quick question.

Does not having a degree stop me from being considered for positions?

I have 20+ years’ experience in IT (6 as a Director of apps Dev and 4 more as a Project Manager) in Australia and UK (dual citizen). I have a coding background as well as experience in large government and private organisations, all the experience to undertake many of the roles I see advertised and should be competitive at interview/application. One issue however, I never finished a degree. I am looking to move to Singapore shortly, and many of the position description that applicants should have a degree.

Will this be a major impediment to securing a position – ie is my application going straight in the bin, even if my skills and experience would make me competitive for the role.

I do have an Advance Dip in Project management and Prince 2 quals. I have done the MOM quick self assessment and employment pass etc should be ok.

Grateful for any advice or similar experiences.

Kind Regards
Ross

Hi

I have been looking at jobs in Singapore recently and was disheartened at the minimum requirement of a degree, but that is not the actual case! You can qualify for a visa with a high level of education, it doesn't have to be a degree.

I did the self assessment test that the Ministry of Manpower have online and qualified for an S Pass with my HND in Business (which is worth 2/3 of a degree).

Let me know how you get on, and good luck with the job hunting! I hope you have better luck than me. Being a non resident has made it virtually impossible, so I am flying out there to try my luck!

Hi Lee, thanks for your response, good information.

Good luck to you also with your job hunt.

Have any other members (or recruiters) had similar experiences?

cheers
Ross

Also, if your salary is considerably above say 10K, they would probably waive the degree requirement. (use to be a P1 visa didn't require a degree, just experience as they reckoned that any company who was willing to pay that kind of money would have already sussed out the potential employee.

Good luck.
