Thank you all
I had a hippo in a drawer that had the most mold in it
couldn't believe it.
I don't know about the air-con's age, I'll have to ask the landlord about that. It looks newer to me.
As for the apartment, it's big and bright and we do not use much air-con, and even when we do it's not much lower than the outside temperature, just enough to get rid of the moisture. Also we don't have much stuff, no rugs and moisture trapping things, chest of drawers in each room, and open clothes racks.
Last few days was so humid, aircon couldn't get it down. My guess is that mold was already there when we moved in, dormant, waiting for a perfect alignment of the stars.

Agree with everything, except that not all places in Asia are humid.

Before you move into a newly rental or purchased unit / house, you should get a mold guy in to inspect the place first.
I would normally get the place disinfected, before i move in.
Air-conditioning fan coils should be checked for mold infections, take note that "chemical cleaning" by the air con guy is NOT disinfection.
The fan coils are the most conducive place in the home or office where the molds will thrive.
Leaking pipes / plumbing in the false ceilings, should be disinfected, before and after the pipes / false ceiling are changed.
Painting over a moldy spot is a BAD idea, always remember that the protein in paint is a food source for molds, and that molds will remain in a domain stage, and will spring to live, when the conditions are conducive - Damp with moisture / bad ventilation / condensation.
Closing the bathroom room door / open the bathroom ventalation windows after a hot shower, into the bedroom will help stop condensation from happening.
In case there is no way to keep moisture out, get a correct area dehumidifier in that room, KEEP DRY.
Use separate footwear, for your outings, indoor use and balcony / patio use. Do not go barefoot into your patio / outdoor and back into your home. You might be bringing the mold in to your home.
Remember that Asia is humid, you would have to live accordingly.
and that all mold problems can be solved.

Hi all,
Dehumidifiers / heating rods will not eliminate an already mold infected home, these will only slow down / stop the existing mold growth.
As for my tips that Scarlett had posted, i have complied a more comprehensive one, found below:

As for the air-conditioning unit that looked "new", please turn off the unit, take a torchlight and look into the area that the cool air comes out from.
Cause if the AC's are infected, it will continue to blow out the spores whenever you turn it on.
I meant most of South East Asia is humid.

Just a little note, the Scribd document you quoted doesn't load in Firefox, and works fine in IE only

It works well in Chrome.
You need the proper add-on/plugin.

Works fine in Firefox. At least in FF 9.0.1

I disagree with quite a few of the tips you provided.
a) I live in a semi-D, far below six stories... windows open all the time... no mold problem.
b) I always open my bathroom after a shower so that the moisture can dissipate... then again, my windows are open... see above.
c) My pillow cases and mattresses are not wrapped, but then again my house is open air.
Bottom line: An open environment is most conducive to non-mold. Do things to make you place moldy.
1) Keep it closed, with no air circulation.
2) Allow the humidity from showers and cooking to infect you place.
Do agree with one thing. If you have a mold problem, get it professionally killed.

I used to live on the second floor of an HDB...and boy, was air circulation a problem. So maybe ev's tips are just for hive dwellers?

If circulation with windows open is a problem, then yes, I would agree with you, and EV's recommendations make sense.

Bad news. It works with my Firefox too.
Oh, shucks, worse news .. it works on my home Laptop firefox now as well, which had been waiting for some update .. and a restart of the firefox brought up the Scribd document.
Though my Office Firefox doesn't still bring up the Scribd !
Anyway, let's not detract EV-D
