I am a Hong Kong Chinese with both Hong Kong and Australia passport. Lived and worked in both places. Elderly parents living in Australia and I don't have a family.
Is dual nationality not viewed upon favourably when applying for SPR?
Also is SPR approval getting tightened now due to covid-19? I wonder if the government is hoping to shrink PR population size because of downturn, or will they want to increase local workforce...
1 You already have dual nationality and if you apply for PR here, it might not been seen as a positive
2. COVID MAY slow down application processing
In any country, the first priority is to make sure locals are employed without any issues.
But note the above 2 are not the only factors that decide the application outcome.
I echo what SF has said.
You may want to share about your age, education, occupation/industry, length of stay, etc.
1. PR is a stepping stone to citizenship so there should some degree of consideration on your dual nationality especially, if you will give up the Oz one to be an SC in the longer term.
2. From 2013-18, an average of 31,000 PRs were granted each year, 2018 was 32,700. As posted by a member in a another thread, ICA has actually sent out notification to inform that there will be delays in processing so the number is expected to decrease by a little bit. Also maybe because those back office officers have been redeployed to frontline for SHN enforcement, etc. Just my wild guess. Another point to consider is the impending general elections but I think it may not play a big part.
3. Of course the priority of any gahmen is to protect local employees, and rightly so. I’m not going into the discussion of is it right to grant PR to foreigners just so that they also become protected during recessions. Instead let’s focus on what you bring to the table. The gahmen may have a high level number of PR to give out each year in mind. But applicants are assessed on their own merits, if you posses the right expertise especially in areas that SG wants to grow and be able to demonstrate or at least perceived to commit yourself here, you may just get it.
