Finding work/living in Singapore with expunged misdemeanor
Finding work/living in Singapore with expunged misdemeanor
So I'm looking to possibly find work in engineering or software development in Singapore after I graduate and get a few years experience. Now when I was 18-19 (10 years ago) I was convicted of a misdemeanor charge of loitering which I can get expunged now. And around that time I was arrested but not convicted of aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident (sounds really bad but they made it seem like I purposely hit someone with my car when I didn't). All of this wouldn't pose a problem for me trying to find work in the states but I'm concerned it will hinder my chances of living in Singapore. I did look at the work visa and it asks if you were convicted in any country, if I have a misdemeanor expunged do I have to disclose that information? Can they see everything? I just want to know if my dream of living in Singapore is done for.

Re: Finding work/living in Singapore with expunged misdemeanor
It's not your record that will stop you from getting a job in Singapore, it's your lack of experience and lack of networking. I've posted many threads on the subject... the people who come to work in Singapore typically already work for a MNC elsewhere and are transferred in... even experienced people attempting to come in cold are sorely disappointed.
Re: Finding work/living in Singapore with expunged misdemeanor
Say I get more experience and network and all that. Will they look at my application and see a expunged misdemeanor and immediately put it into the garbage? I need to know if this expat plan should just be tossed out and just be content in the states
Re: Finding work/living in Singapore with expunged misdemeanor
I doubt the old offences will be an issue. You're not required to disclose expunged offences.

Okay say I did get my work visa and end up working there for a handful of years and like it so much I decide to get permanent residence or even citizenship would they matter then?

No. But the hurdles for PR and citizenship are extremely high for non Chinese or Malay races. You would do well to read threads on moving and getting a PR. Your chances are slim.
Re: Finding work/living in Singapore with expunged misdemeanor
Damn, well thank you for opening my eyes. Glad at least my petty misdemeanor wouldn't get in the way of it. As a Eurasian (Half white/Half Filipino/Chinese) with rather fluent Chinese would my chances be just as slim as any foreigner?
Re: Finding work/living in Singapore with expunged misdemeanor
Can you pass a Chinese race person? If so it might help although I believe ICA are almost at the point of demanding DNA to prove so now

No, I don't think so. To most people, I look Mediterranean (Spanish, Italian, Greek) But to people who have had experience of what Eurasians look like I think I'm definitely Eurasian looking. But I do have Chinese in my DNA test.

Obviously it's not enough that ICA will consider you Chinese as it appears you would have less than 25% chinese in your ancestry. In fact, You probably have as much spanish in your DNA as you do Chinese. Not counting the half caucasian you got from your mother/father. Pipe dreaming.
Re: Finding work/living in Singapore with expunged misdemeanor
We don't know the rules for Chinese ancestry but I think it's pretty much going to be proven via documented ancestry that can be traced back to either the mainland or significant diaspora population centres.
