NS liability for new citizen (formerly PR on PTS scheme)

Post by trendem » Wed, 04 Jul 2018 1:19 pm

I am a 28 year old 1st generation male PR on the Professional/Technical Personnel/Skilled Workers scheme. When I became a PR, I received a letter from MINDEF saying that I was exempted from National Service.

Does anyone know whether that exemption will continue if I took up Singapore citizenship? Or is there a risk that I will be required to serve NS, given my relatively young age (I understand that, strictly speaking, NS obligations for male citizens only cease at the age of 40)?

I've looked everywhere but can't find any concrete information on this - the online sources all tend to focus on the NS obligations of the children of new citizens. Any guidance will be much appreciated.

Your exemption will carry through.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!
