Singapore Airlines nonstop to New York and LA

Post by Shikakui » Sat, 28 Apr 2018 12:33 am

The Strait times report that Singapore Airlines is scheduled to restart their Singapore to New York nonstop flight by the end of 2018, and restart their Singapore to Los Angeles nonstop flight in early 2019.

The flight to New York will be the world’s longest.

Unfortunately it will most like be $$$. However it is without a doubt the best way to get to the USA quickly and hassle free.

What a huge waste of fuel to avoid a stop.

Eh? I thought most fuel was burnt on taxis and climb to cruising elevation? If you have half of that on a trip (one less landing and taxi) you use half the fuel...

You have to have fuel to carry all that fuel... just like a rocket. For the really long haul flights, you give up a lot of seats in order to carry the extra weight of fuel.

While it's true that you burn a lot of fuel to get to cruise, you also get most of that back coming down when the engines are not much above idle.

You'll see that freighters rarely go more than 3000 miles between stops because of fuel costs.

From a wiki article:
Flight distance

For long-haul flights, the airplane needs to carry additional fuel, leading to higher fuel consumption. Above a certain distance it becomes more fuel-efficient to make a halfway stop to refuel despite the energy losses in descent and climb. For example, a Boeing 777-300 reaches the tipping point at 3,000 nautical miles (5,600 km). It is more fuel-efficient to make a non-stop flight below this distance and to make a stop when covering a longer total distance.[5]
So... this is being done because passengers want it.

I'd rather spend three to four hours in an airport stretching my legs and getting a coffee instead of this long ass madness..
To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

When I fly over in June, I've got a 17 hour 30 minute run LAX-SIN. I'd much rather hit Taipei, HK, Narita but I'm flying United on miles and that is my only choice unless I take a very long layover.

when United launched the nonstop from San Fran to Singapore I took it but... would never do that long a flight again. was a 17+ hours flight and i was so restless, I ran out of things to do.

i aim for layovers when possible. get to explore the airport if its at a nice place too

If you could only light a joint on the way over, things would be so much more "groovy".

i took this flight earlier! i say it saves me tons of time, because i don't have to stop for a few hours stopover, and also the flight is direct, instead of going a zigzag via a stopover airport.

the seats and comfortable (economy premium, not business class) and easy to sleep in.
though when i return to singapore, i exhausted all the movies available... so thankfully i brought 2 books to read.
