UBS salary

Post by Kris528 » Fri, 25 May 2018 2:27 am

Hello everyone,

What would be the best salary for a person with 10yrs data analytics experience ?

Recently I have interviewed by UBS and next week i have a HR interview.

How much should I ask them ?

Any idea on UBS salaries?

Thanks,
Kris

I have roughly the same level of experience (but most of it is outside the finance sector). I was offered around 230k base by one of the local banks. Please do report back what you were offered, it will help us all calibrate!

The only way it will help you calibrate is if you are all clones. #-o ](*,)

You don't need to be snarky, SMS.

You don't need to act like a fool either. Asking a question where the answer is obvious. #-o ](*,)

Again, SMS - you are engaging in ad hominem attacks, rather than contributing anything meaningful.

Actually, you are wrong. What I gave you was factual. You know it and I know it and everybody who's read it knows it. The problem is that those of you who ask these types of questions or ask for useless information get huffy when they don't hear their preconceived ideal answers so then they get upset. Most people don't like the unvarnished truth. But here, that's what you get. If it rubs your fur the wrong way, guess what....

As someone who routinely hires specialist technology staff, I have to agree with SMS.

The poster did not provide enough information to qualify what a reasonable expectation would be.

It also depends heavily on previous salaries; while Singapore HR will make greater allowances for people moving from overseas due to things like COLA, differing job markets etc, they still try not to hand out 100% salary increases if they can help it.

I heard someone with 20 years in software development projects was offered twice my salary.

I imagine after my boss stops laughing he will gently tell me to piss off if I suggested this to him in order to justify a raise.

Okay, here is some background about me:

10 years of experience in data science, machine learning & AI. Out of those, around 6 years were in academia, 1 year in startups and the rest in finance. I have published novel ML research, have a Masters degree from a local university and have lead small (4-6 person) data teams.

As someone who hires specialist technology staff, what do you think are the upper limits of the salary range that i can make?

so that would be very different from 10 years data analytics experience no?

And someone offered you 230M.

So sounds like you already have a pretty good idea.

What kind of roles do you hire for, Brian? Do you have any experience hiring for data science / machine learning / advanced analytics? Do you think there are reasonable chances of making 350k+ with my background?

For a data scientist, you seem to have difficulty getting beyond generalities.

Would we employ you for 350,000? Not a chance. We have people who work for us who both match and exceed your (very general) profile and have the specific domain skills we are need. We simply don't need to pay anything close to that figure to get the right people. Nor, apparently does the local bank. Not that we don't still pay a lot, but certainly not at that level.

Are there other people who would pay 350,000? It's possible, it would depend on what precise skills you have vs. their need vs. what's available in the market.

A guy with a PHD in math who write code may be lucky to get a decent job paying 80,000/year. A guy with a PHD in math who writes code and who works as a quant can easily expect a good 6-figure salary. If your 'finance' background were capital markets, it's entirely possible someone might.

I am also sure there are other people on message forums who have 'heard' someone got that much for 10 years in something or other like say data analytics; and someone else who might confuse that for data science.

Not a chance.

Even though some of your skills are in demand, there are actually quite a few people with equivalent skills that will do the job for a heck of a lot less than $350K

In honesty, the $230K offer is top end for a VP in Tech (and with your experience you wont get a higher grade) and higher than the banding will allow in some international banks.

If you believe you are worth it, then hang on for that $350K+ but then report back whether you got it or not.

P.S. Also HR are not stupid - the most you are likely to get is around 15% above what you are currently earning (equalised) so you would have to currently be on around $240K USD

Thanks for your perspectives, Brian and the_ref.

Could you elaborate more on the specific domain skills you are referring to?

Presumably, there are plenty of people in banking tech who do make 350k+. What do their backgrounds look like?

What would it take for someone like me to land roles at a grade higher than that of a VP? Is the primary missing ingredient more management experience?

Very few technology staff will hit 230M. Even fewer will hit $350M, those that do are generally managing very large technology organizations.
