Help me to identify the right Coaxial cable splitter

Post by subashgk007 » Mon, 07 May 2018 10:24 am

I have recently got a new starhub cable broadband. The HDB unit i stay at common wealth drive doesn't have wall board with dual port which stops me from using both the TV and modem.

The wall port looks something like this Image

I have checked in an electrical shop in Tanglin market, but he doesn't have one.

Where can i find a splitter for this port ? Lazada seems to have it, but the connection type is not matching with the wall port. Could someone help me to find out right one ?

The screw type is a Type F coaxial cable, you normally connect that directly to a starhub modem or TV set top box.

For internet access via cable you need a cable modem. That normally comes from Starhub etc as a separate box. You connect both to the coaxial cable with the F type splitter and some cables.

The RJ-8 socket in your picture is for a phone line I think. What exactly are you trying to do with that? If you're trying to use ADSL (from Singtel) you need to connect the ADSL model to the phone line.

Thanks PMGMK.

BTW, I am not planning to use the RJ-8 socket.

Can this splitter be used ?

No. It will attenuate the signal incorrectly. You need an actual splitter.

they both look like F type to me. You can buy these cables and splitters at a lot of hardware stores.

My current set up Image

Show this to the “uncle” in the hardware shop. Ask if you can change if it doesn’t work.

Thank you PNGMK and simonraj. Managed to get this connector from a hardware store.

This solves my problem temporarily until i find the actual splitter. I suspect it causes a signal quality loss though.

You can also get it cheaply at carousell. Or exchange it with the Uncle that sold it you. They are very flexible.

IF you get enough signal for a connection - that's all you need with the magic of digitisation. The installers like to use splitters as it stops problems with SWR corrupting others signals.

This is all moot as of June. The SCV coax network is being shut down.
