I understand that it was impossible for the family to pay Lola a livable wage as they are struggling financially. But every little bit helps. Even $10 per month. It may sound like an insignificant amount but will go a long way in offering her a semblance of (financial?) freedom and human dignity. Just pay her something, whatever the amount. Even if it means foregoing one meal a month for the family.

We should never enslave another human being. Regardless of how great the temptation is. It will always come back and bite you. Guess what? At her death bed at confession, what was the mother's regret during her lifetime :-k. She knew what she was doing all this time. The truth will always rear its head despite our greatest effort to bury and evade.

And then we see how slavery play out right here in USA. Up to this day, black population and white people still trying to figure out how to get along with each other. Slavery started in the 1600's. They have a history of co-existence for over three centuries and still, the relationship is volatile.

Oh mine, oh mine, the meat industry .......It is difficult to reconcile the fact that my meat consumption is causing trauma for another human being. How can the slaughter house improve the work condition of their workers?

Randomness of life ....... :-k

As the daughter of Vietnamese-Chinese refugees who came to America for a better life, I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to go to Harvard, become a pediatrician, and serve others. But there are too many kids who are just as qualified and whose families work just as hard, who don’t get as lucky as I did.

I have never understood why some people are lucky enough to be borned with the chance that I have. To have this path in life. And why across the world, there is a woman just like me, with the same ability, same desire, same work ethic and love for family, only she sits in refugee camp and she has no voice. She worries about what her child will eat, how to keep them safe....... I don't know why this is my life and that's her's

Thank you for taking care of the emotional and mental health of the men who serve their country. It means so much. More than any words can express.

The aftermath of the industrial revolution. The price that we pay in the pursuit of effeciency. And did it really make us a more efficient race, when all things are being considered :-k ? I mean, how productive and how well can a person of low consciousness and neurotic tendency contribute to the team and society?

Are we gradually becoming more crass and less motivated? Not trying to denigrate ourselves but thinking aloud :-k .

It is not terrifying to realize my own smallness in the larger scheme of things. But in fact, liberating and humbling at the same time. Which is why I never bought into ethnocentricism or nationalism. Or tribalism.

And then there are those who challenged this lackof "but then very few people think like you". In their attempt to push their Chinese (Singaporean) agenda onto the world and me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I shall respectfully disagree. If they constantly need to view the world thru the lens of race and my yellowness, is it really my problem :P ? In a practical sense, it could very well be, I guess. But only if I entertain and breath life into this idea. And that is my take to these naysayers !

Although I would like to conclude my post by expressing my love and admiration of my adopted country. My America. Do you know that America is the only country in the world that is formed based on an ideal, rather than nationality? She moves me with her aspiration.
